I read a TON of books, but I also love anime and manga - and that includes Avatar: The Last Airbender.
And yes, I know ATLA technically isn't anime, but more often than not it gets lumped in with some of the discussions.
Especially considering we're already mixing fantasy fiction into the anime world...
So at one point I thought to myself: "What books should I read if I like Avatar: The Last Airbender?" and "What book series are similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender?"
Technically it may have started with the thought on what to read if I love shonen anime/manga, but I also have articles on that in our "Books To Read If You Like..." section.
This one is a lot of fun, with only one book series returning that has been on other lists (hint, Brandon Sanderson, hint), and the rest falling into YA Novel series and even a solo book for you guys.

Up first on our list of the top books to read if you like Avatar: The Last Airbender is a runner up being that it might come across as an obvious option, but one that readers don't always know exists: The Kyoshi Series.
Now, I don't want to say "an obvious choice" and steer you in the wrong direction here, because there are some things you should know before immediately grabbing The Rise of Kyoshi.
For example, you WILL be taken directly into the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, so if you want to be teleported right back in, this is a great choice. But, some of you are likely looking for a new series to start with a new world, and some of you are likely looking to get that Gaang vibe - which you won't be getting with this series.

Book three doesn't come out until September 2023, but I already have it preordered, if that tells you anything about how awesome this series is.
For this one you're going to be teleported into a whole new world with magic, but magic that is being taken away by a tyrant king who has found a way to switch it off, and also slay diviners in the process (including our protagonists mother). So we team up with Zelie and Princess Amaeri to save magic, and the kingdom along the way.

Coming in at number four among our list of the top books to read if you like Avatar: The Last Airbender is The Red Queen series!
I really wanted to put this one higher on the list, but there are just so many good options for ATLA fans out there that I had to force myself to be fair and really analyze at which ones hit all the marks.
Red Queen has it's own world where we follow our team of heroes (specifically Mare Barrow and company) to win back the kingdom. You'll get X-Men vibes from the powers, but you can definitely feel the ATLA bending come through as well while getting the saving the kingdom trope.

NUMBER THREE: JADE FIRE GOLD
Coming in within the top three books to read if you like Avatar: The Last Airbender is Jade Fire Gold.
This book hits all the marks. The only downfall it really has is the fact that it isn't a series, BUT if you're looking for a one off book that can scratch your ATLA itch, then this is your pick.
You'll have an elemental system with chinese elements, Gaang vibes, and two characters that give off Zuko and Aang vibes at times as well.

NUMBER TWO: GENTLEMEN BASTARDS

Coming in at number two among our list of the top books to read if you like Avatar: The Last Airbender is The Mistborn Series.
When I was reading through other peoples lists (which I usually do to make sure I'm not coming up with identical lists and switching it up for you guys) I noticed that NONE of them were including Mistborn, which is crazy.
I was actually originally worried that they would ALL have it.
Mistborn is more adult fantasy than the YA novels we have making up the majority of this list, which could be one of the reasons, but to not include it is doing you guys a disservice. Not only do you get anime vibes but you also get metal-bending...I mean c'mon!

Coming in at number one among our list of the top books to read if you like Avatar: The Last Airbender is The Shadow and Bone Trilogy.
Thankfully there were one or two other lists that included this trilogy, but it amazes me that there were more that didn't have it on their list than did.
I LOVE Leigh Bardugo and have read every series she put out, but this one is the perfect one to throw you in for some bending, fighting for the kingdom style feels.
And, it's even now a Netflix series that you guys can binge once you're done loving the books.
