That being said, you jump forward 16 years after the last book.

So, we got two books of Hester Shaw and Tom Natsworthy, but we come into this one with Hester Natsworthy, Tom, and their daughter Wren who immediately gets herself into trouble.

Now, I will say that I was hesitant of this time jump, but also secretly (my deep inside self trying to hide it from the rest of myself) liked what was happening with Doctor Zero, The Green Storm, Stalker Fang, and even this older version of Anchorage and it's people (including Caul).

Although I think Caul could have had a much different twist on his character...

Here's the thing...we get some pretty intense moments all the way throughout this one. The same up and downs we saw in the first two, and points with the same excitement level.  And, it actually even starts off pretty quick as well.

We have Hester crazy as every from the very beginning all the way to the end where she threatens Penny and her own daughter to keep her secret and then once it's out she decides to stay behind...

And that's just the end of her craziness! 

So, yes, Hester is still being Hester in this one.

The difference is the fact that when I initially started reading this series I was very concerned about where it could possibly go.  And then I got much more concerned once I read book two because it felt even less likely to be able to work up the same magic.  And, while the magic was there, I just felt like I was reading a new storyline within the same world...if that somehow makes sense.

The book itself was exciting and fun.  Good book, and even recommend the read.  The issue is I was expecting and hoping for something more out of the series after a certain point and don't think I'll be continuing on strictly for that reason and the fact that I just have so many other series I want to continue that this would be taking away from.

So, in a way, I guess it was fun and great, but just not good ENOUGH to compare to other novels that I've read and that I know are waiting for me.

There's honestly a very good chance reading Children of Blood and Bone had something to do with this decision - because that book was absolutely magical in comparison to this series and I CANNOT wait to read another.

And it got me thinking of books like that, and The Cormoran Strike Series from J.K Rowling (aka Robert Galbraith), and even The Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones series - and just books that I literally wait for the second they come out and don't put down until I'm done.

And, unfortunately this series isn't in that mix right now.

But hey, I still give it a 3.5 out of 5, and it may have got a solid 4 just for storytelling and a book alone - but within the series I was looking for a different spin.

Review Conclusion

Overall fun read. Metaphorical. Same fun characters. Moved well, paced well, and even had the same excitement levels that the rest of the series brought. Personally just was hoping for something different to come of it and apparently not a huge fan of the time jump that was needed to continue it.
