Game of Thrones Season Six premiered last night, for those of you who didn’t know….
Actually, if you didn’t know just stop reading this article – you don’t deserve it!
Just kidding. Â Kind of…
One of the main questions I receive from people looking to start (or continue) their fitness journey is how I stay motivated – and how they can too!
I always give them similar responses, explaining where my motivation comes from, where they might possibly draw theirs from, and also explaining that everyone is different in this regard. Â Sometimes it hits home and the people asking for help utilize the methods and I continue hearing from them as their SuperHuman transformations continue – but others fall off and I find myself wondering if they’re still going or if I could have helped more.
Some great resources I always point people to right here on the site are:
- Never Give Up: Guidelines to Stay Motivated Through your Superhero Journey
- Defining your Fitness Goals: What are your options and Why do you need them?
I think both articles are relevant for most people, especially the ones just looking to start their journey, but in this article I’m going to do my best to break down where different types of people pull their motivation. Â Hopefully I can make it fun, while still showing you examples you may be able to draw from and use for your own journey.
The Different Types of Motivation
(Shown by Game of Thrones Characters)
Bronn: Incentive
Why does Bronn do anything? Â
The answer is pretty simple: he wants monetary gain. Â He wants money!
Bronn has an incentive that keeps him motivated. Â He wants and loves money, so he continues doing what he does (and does it quite well!).
How can you use this?
An incentive doesn’t have to be money. Â Although it can, of course. Â Maybe your incentive is confidence, or the opposite sex. Â Maybe you know in order to be more confident, or in order to get the yourself in front of the girls/guys you want you need to start living healthier and get in SuperHuman shape. Â That’s an incentive – and we all can have them.
Many people are driven by knowing there is a reward for them at the end. Â Maybe you need to be incentivized by a fitness challenge, or maybe you can find yourself a reward that really hits home.
Sansa Stark: Fear
Where does Sansa pull her motivation?
Most recently, as we saw last night as well, Sansa pulls motivation from fear.
Hell, I’d be scared of Ramsey too.
How can you use this?
Fear can be a tricky motivator. Â Fear usually comes into play when incentive motivation doesn’t work.
Is there a punishment or a consequence for failing? Â What if you tell everyone about your fitness goals and use that as a way to hold yourself accountable? Â Will you then be fearful of failing?
I do this sometimes. Â I’ll make a goal well known in fear of failing – fully knowing that others know about my goal. Â I want to prove that I can do it – and I don’t want to quit.
Cersei Lannister: Power
Where does Cersei’s motivation come from?
This one was pretty easy. Â Cersei is power hungry in her motivation.
Of course each of these characters have other forms of motivation they pull from, but even at the worst of times you can see Cersei fighting and struggling to get back to her power role.
How can you use this?
I’m not telling anyone to be like Cersei. Â Normally this form of motivation would come from the desire to gain control and be on top. Â I’m going to take it in a different direction.
Sure, you can utilize the power motivator if you want to gain control of people, etc. – but what about strength “power”?
Since we’re talking about a SuperHuman transformation, what if you learn to use the power motivator in the sense of becoming a more powerful person? Â Gaining strength, becoming fit and healthy – these are all ways I believe people become more powerful within themselves.
Maybe The Mountain would have been a better choice for this one…
Samwell Tarly: Social
Where does Sam pull his motivation from?
I guess you can say he also pulls it from fear, but Sam also has been constantly trying to find his place and fit in. Â He uses social motivation to try and become a true brother in the Night’s Watch.
How can you use this?
I think this is a strong one. Â I feel that a lot of people who message me are looking to gain acceptance, maybe not only from themself, but also from others around them.
We all start somewhere. Â That’s important to remember. Â People sometimes email in and are frightened to go to a gym environment for the first time. Â Fear of not fitting in. Â We all start somewhere, and I promise – I used to be skinny with a high percent of body fat, while not being able to lift any weight (it wasn’t fun at first, but I had to push through)! Â We all have to start and taking the first step is huge.
Using the social motivator is fine, but I would suggest also giving yourself an incentive, whether it be for yourself and/or for something/someone else.
Arya Stark: Growth
Where does Arya get her motivation?
Of course Arya has an incentive for her path, but she also knows very well that she needs to first grow and improve.
She has a yearning for self-improvement that will allow her to finally get what she wants in the end.
How can you use this?
This one’s quite simple.
Do you have a desire for self growth and self-improvement? Â If you’re on this site and reading this article the answer is most likely yes. Â A SuperHuman transformation is definitely self-improvement. Â Sometimes people motivate themselves with their want to grow and improve. Â You can do the same.
Daenerys Targaryen: Achievement
What motivates Daenerys Targaryen?
Well, to be completely honest, I think Khaleesi has a lot of different forms of motivation.
That being said, one form would definitely be achievement. Â Khaleesi is motivated to achieve her seat at the iron throne and she’ll do whatever it takes to get there.
What will you do anything to get?
How can you use this?
It’s very similar to incentive, but this type of motivation is more of a drive to overcome and defeat new challenges. Â You utilize this while you set goals and watch yourself destroy them.
Which are the best to use?
Obviously this depends on the person. Â I like to hold myself accountable with a version of social/fear motivation by telling people about my goals, but I also do a lot of it for growth and achievement as well.
Don’t forget to also reward your progress. Â Take pride in the strides you make and each new boundary you break. Â Use the mirror and your progress you can visualize and see in your stats at the gym as ways to continue pushing forward.

SUPERHUMAN SECRETS V.2
NOW UPDATED AND EXPANDED WITH A NEW SECTION & SEVEN BONUSES
I’m most like Arya and a little bit like Sansa. I love self-improvment and being the best person that I can be. At times fear works as a great motivation tool for me because I don’t want to miss out and have to wonder “what if” later in life.
