Well this is definitely something different, huh?
If you haven’t already met my dog Gimli, you’re about to.
We obviously host hundreds and hundreds of workouts based around characters and celebrities (if you’re new, check out our awesome Workout Database), but over the last year or so I have had some significant changes take place.
I moved down to Florida (from Long Island, NY) to get a much bigger space for SHJ, and with that I also got Gimli.
And, being that I am dog’s best friend, he basically does everything I do; which also involves finding ways to incorporate him into my fitness regime.
So while this might be based around Krypto The Superdog, we’re really going to be talking about my dog Gimli!
In the future I will be hosting some more articles on dogs and fitness, and even potentially revolving them around some more character/superhero dogs, but for now this is the best place for us to get started!
Gimli The Superdog’s Stats:
Name: Gimli
Age: 13 months old
Breed: Black Lab Mix
Weight: 70 lbs.
If you’ve recently become a new member (in the last year or so) you’ve likely seen a picture of Gimli and I.
I share a ton of pictures of myself, but I share two right off the bat to introduce you to the two of us when you optin for free workout routines and awesomeness from SHJ.
That being said, we (Gimli and I) are not shy about sharing pictures of him, so be prepared for more!

Krypto (AKA Gimli) The Superdog Diet and Nutrition
In an attempt to make this as fun and engaging as our other workout routine articles (I promise we’ll have other dog oriented articles that break away from his format) I want to bring us right back into our main formatting that involves diet and nutrition, workout routine research and then an actual routine!
Gimli is a picky eater.
He is a rescue, and ever since we got him he has been afraid of eating out of a bowl. Â
So when you put those two things together it becomes a bit of a tricky situation.
We have tried making him food at home, kibble, and even a wide array of other foods and we’ve been lucky enough to find a pretty fun mix of foods and treats that work well.
Here are Gimli’s favorite foods and treats to help him continue being a Superdog:
- Primal Freeze Dried Nuggets (Gimli’s Favorite Food that also subs as a treat)
- Dentastix (One per day as per our morning routine after our initial walk/run)
- Zuke’s Grain-Free Superfood Dog Treats (Gimli’s favorite and healthiest training treats)
- Cadet Esophagus Beef Jerky (Not the healthiest, but one of his favorite quick chew rewards)
- Jack and Pup Bully Sticks (His favorite long chew treat/reward)
Other than also mixing in kibble (which sometimes actually has to be fed by hand, this is the core of his diet.
His favorite kibble is Science Diet, and we also make his food quite often with chicken and vegetables; but for the most part the above list mixed with the kibble just about rounds it up.
We also have some gear for his training, but we’ll get to that in the workout portion of this!
Other than the above list we do have some other favorite training treats and random bones we’ll give him as rewards for a job well done (or a good training session), but his favorites are the ones we listed, so I don’t want to give too many options and make it harder than it has to be.

Krypto (AKA Gimli) The Superdog Workout Routine Research
The next step is Gimli’s training gear and some research into some training we can do with our pups.
For me it was quite simple: I wanted to train Gimli to come running with me (in different variations) and I also wanted to train him to run sprints and other fun things that can be turned into games.
For our daily run this is what we utilize:
- Harness: Bolux Dog Harness (after trying a good handful this is definitely the easiest/best we’ve had)
- Running Leash: Hands Free Running Leash by iYo
But it doesn’t stop there.
Being that we’re running I also want to take care of his paws!
Here’s some of the paw stuff we use:
As far as training him to do the sprints and turning it into a game, Gimli’s favorites are his squeaky tennis balls and Kong frisbees (we’ve tried others that he can chew threw when we play tug, but Kong is amazing).
Here’s some links:
- Squeaky Tennis Balls (he loves catching these off one bounce on a run)
- Kong Frisbees (we have large one that he loves playing tug with, but the smaller ones are great too)
Are far as his training goes: his favorite is sprints.
We’ll sprint after the ball or frisbee together (usually a race, although he’ll obviously play fetch alone as well), and then the winner sprints away with it; although he prefers I sprint away with a head start and then he tries to catch me and grab the toy.
His other training involves our daily run, and some fun variations we’ve added in with him.
He prefers running with someone to lead the way, but has also gotten used to, and quite great at running with just me alone.
Being that we noticed he was doing so well with something to lead we’ve also had him attached to me and sprint behind someone on a longboard or even bike…!
Oh, and once he got that down he was pretty keen on pulling someone on the longboard as well!
But, for the most part we have our morning runs that range from 1-3 miles together and then mid day sprints and play time (which he ends up reminding me about after lunch).

Krypto The Superdog (Gimli) Workout Routine
Training Volume:
Every Single Day !
Explanation:Â
Gimli has a schedule that he is very accustomed to now. Regardless of whether or not you’ll be running every single day with your dog or just going for walks and progressively getting ready to run with them: expect them to get better over time and become more and more used to your schedule together.
Gimli’s Super Dog Workout Routine & Daily Schedule
Morning Upon Waking: Walk and Use The Bathroom.
Dentastix (one) on the LoveSac while he waits for me to drink water and have some caffeine!
Morning Run: 1-3 Miles after waiting and relaxing 20-30 minutes while I get ready to go.
Mid-Day – Evening (Depending on when I break my fast) Sprints and Play Time
During play time this will generally last 20-60+ minutes depending on his mood.  He’ll always be ready to play, but the heat is also a factor, and sometimes after sprints and games he’ll take a break in the shade while I read and then we’ll play some more, but other times he’s ready to go inside and eat ice cubes and bully sticks!
