The Most Popular Haikyu Characters have a lot of the same characters from our list of The Most Skilled Haikyu Characters, but with a few new characters sprinkled in!
Haikyu is an interesting addition here at SHJ because the characters don’t really have any super powers, but are exceptionally skilled in certain aspects of playing volleyball.
The characters in our previous Haikyu list covered the unique skill sets of the top 10 characters and now in this list we aim to showcase their personality and highlight the reasons why they are popular among fans.
It’s difficult to really gauge how popular a character is without looking at the impact they have on their peers. In this regard, Haikyu has that in spades. The players of the different teams really get a chance to show their personalities on and off the court, and it’s nice to see that their intensity on the court is sometimes just to bolster team spirit or intimidate their opponents.
Haikyu is one of the most popular sports anime in recent history, and there are surely many other characters who are popular in their own right. However, as we are listing the Most Popular, I’ve had to revisit a few websites to gain more insight into each character’s personality.
If you like listicles like this one, here are a few more I think you might like:

Of course we’ve also done a handful of “Most Powerful” and “Most Popular” for other anime so if you’d like to check those out you can visit our other listicles here.
For this one I scoured the internet for help and almost every listicle had nearly the same characters in their list, with a few different placements each time. I hope you enjoy this article. Cheers!
As always, leave your comments below if you were expecting other characters!
TOP 10 MOST POPULAR HAIKYU CHARACTERS
Number Ten: Kenma Kozume
Team: Nekoma High School
Position: Setter
Starting off our list of The Most Popular Haikyu Characters of All Time we have Nekoma High School’s setter, Kenma Kozume!
Kenma has a usually quiet, composed, and analytical personality. He rarely loses his temper and doesn’t get too excited about many things – except video games. Because of his reserved nature, he rarely voices his opinions. Because he rarely shows interest in things, he gives off a cold personality; however, he is shown to be caring of the well-being of his friends and teammates.
Do you agree with Kenma’s placement in the top ten or would you push him down to the honorable mentions and bring someone else up into his slot?

Number Nine: Ryonosuke Tanaka
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Wing Spiker and Ace
Coming in at number nine on the list of the most popular Haikyu characters of all time is Ryunosuke Tanaka!
Tanaka is loud, easily angered and no stranger to picking fights. However, despite his rough exterior,he also possesses a strong mental fortitude, and doesn’t let himself be brought down by things like being targeted or being blocked on the court.

Number Eight: Kei Tsukishima
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Middle Blocker
At number eight among the most popular Haikyu characters of all time is Kei Tsukishima.
Despite having a very blunt attitude with others, Tsukishima has a low self-esteem and thinks himself inferior. What makes him popular is that he uses what people say about him to motivate himself further and prove them wrong. He doesn’t mind what others say, he just keeps pushing himself further to improve his skills and show them they’re wrong.

Number Seven: Asahi Azumane
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Wing Spiker and Ace
Next up among our most popular Haikyu characters of all time is Karasuno’s ace, Asahi Azumane!
Despite his rougish appearance, Asahi is rather quiet and gentle and has difficulties realizing his actual skill on the court. When the first years come, Asahi leaves before they get there for practice, still thinking that he is to blame for their previous defeat. However, the team doesn’t think that, and with their help, Asahi has slowly gained confidence and accepted his crucial role as Karasuno’s ace.

Number Six: Tetsuro Kuroo
Team: Nekoma High School
Position: Captain and Middle Blocker
Just missing the top five and coming in at number six among the most popular Haikyu characters of all time is Nekoma High’s captain, Tetsuro Kuroo. While he has the reputation as the “scheming king” by opposing teams, he is very reliable, strong, and caring for his teammates, lifting their spirits when they are feeling down.

Number Five: Toru Oikawa
Team: Aoba Johsai High School
Position: Captain and Setter
Making it to the top five among the most popular Haikyu characters of all time and #5 in the top ten most skilled Haikyu character list is the captain of Aoba Johsai High School, Toru Oikawa!
He has a flirtatious and childish nature, which appeals him to the ladies (much to Tanaka and Nishinoya’s envy). He has a serious nature when it comes to playing but has been known to show a softer side especially with his teammates and with Hinata.
Toru Oikawa at SHJ:

Number Four: Koshi Sugawara
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Vice-Captain and Substitute Setter
As the former vice captain at Karasuno, Koshi has a soothing and gentle personality and is the pillar of strength of the team, encouraging them to keep moving forward despite setbacks and helping them to keep improving their strategy and game.
What makes him popular is that he is always there to cheer the team on, even after graduating and leaving the team, he still attends their games and cheers from the stands. Now, that’s team spirit!
Koshi Sugawara at SHJ:

Number Three: Yu Nishinoya
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Libero
Yu is a very energetic and boisterous person who has little regard for what people think of him on and off the court. However, despite his devil may care attitude, he does seem to care about how his teammates feel and what they think of him. According to Tanaka, Yu is “too fired up for his own good”.
While he is extremely tactless off the court, he adopts a completely different attitude when playing and becomes serious and focused. He does his best to provide the support his teammates need and is very hard-working.
Yu Nishinoya at SHJ:

Number Two: Shoya Hinata
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Middle Blocker
Hinata is a cheerful and energetic spiker and is very friendly with others, a trait some of his teammates use to win other people over. His friendly and straightforward personality allows him to make friends with even the quietest people effortlessly.
What makes him so popular among fans other than the fact that he’s the main protagonist in the series is that he is very driven. He made it his goal to become as skilled as the ‘Small Giant’ that he saw on TV as a kid, and is extremely hard working when it comes to improving his skill and achieving his goals.
Shoya Hinata at SHJ:
Number One: Tobio Kageyama
Team: Karasuno High School
Position: Setter
In number one on our list of most popular Haikyu characters, we have the ‘King of the Court’ and the genius setter of Karasuno High School, Tobio Kageyama!
Initially appearing as rude, domineering, and uncaring, Tobio was labeled as the ‘King of the Court’, a derogatory name to showcase his need to control every move on the court. After coming to Karasuno, he has developed a bit of confidence and has come to the realization that he isn’t in charge of the whole court and has learned that he is part of a team who has his back. Because of this, he has become more humble and gives up control of the ball to the spikers like Hinata.
Would you place Kageyama at number one or does Hinata give him a run for his money?
Who else would you pull from the honorable mentions to bring up to this list?
Tobio Kageyama at SHJ:
But I’d also love to hear who YOU think should be on this list!
