Castlevania has been in the hearts of many for years. Since the late 80’s, games have been steadily streamed out in the series, bringing an amazing lore-rich world to the vampire community. Then Netflix was kind enough to bring us a beautiful animated series, which is what we’re here to talk about today.
Trust me there was enough content to go through with this series alone…
Many characters in the series deserve recognition, but only 10 shall be chosen. However, I will be sure to throw in some runner-ups as well.
BUT, before I get into the popularity of these characters, I want to mention that Castlevania is a part of our ever growing Workout Database.

For this one I scoured the internet for help and almost every single listicle has a different take on who the most popular Castlevania characters are. So what I decided to do was compile ALL of them together and then took the average of all the compiled ratings and placed them in their slot accordingly. Additional characters who did not make it in the top ten that I want to mention as well can be seen in the runner-up section.

Number Ten: Sumi
Role: Vampire Huntress
Species: Human
Starting off our list of the most popular Castlevania characters is the sly Sumi!
Sumi comes into the scene after the initial defeat of Dracula. Along with her brother Taka, she takes advantage of Alucard’s loneliness in order to receive training in vampire slaying. She is no stranger to the dark and twisted world that vampires have created, as she herself was once mistress to one of Dracula’s main court. She is a master manipulator who gets to the hearts of her victim’s before using her advantage to strike.

Number Nine: Striga
Role: Carmilla’s Army Commander
Species: Vampire
Speeding into number nine on the list of the most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the mighty warrior: Striga!
Should see her in daytime armor…
Striga is the ravenous tactician of the Styrian sisters. She is a dangerous force on the battlefield, but is no fool. However, Striga also has a heart underneath all her savagery. Throughout her appearance in the series, Striga shows a deep affection for her lover Morana. This love is not shown for her enemies when she’s called to fight though. Morana eventually begins to cleave her way into Striga’s heart, who begins to wish for a simple life with her lover.

Number Eight: Isaac
Role: Dracula’s Forgemaster
Species: Human
At number eight among the most popular Castlevania characters of all time is Dracula’s favorite human: Isaac!
Isaac is a very serious man who lives the life of a Forgemaster religiously. His hatred of humanity is equal, if not even greater, than that of the vampires he works amongst. Dracula and him connect on a deep level in their views of the disgusting lives humans lead. As the series goes forward however, Isaac begins to see both sides of humanity and realizes his single-minded views of humanity were only a fraction of the whole picture.

Number Seven: Sypha Belnades
Role: Scholar
Species: Human
Coming in at number seven of our most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the Speaker Sypha!
I’m honestly surprised with Sypha’s placement on this list. She is the focused magician who brings the other half to Trevor Belmont. She is an upbeat and playful person who loves the thrill of adventure and obtaining greater knowledge of the world around her. She may appear a soft-natured and kind person, but she is truly a strong-willed woman who is not afraid to speak her mind and commit to what she believes is right.

Number Six: Hector
Role: Forgemaster
Species: Human
Number six of our most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the hammer-wielding Hector!
Hector to me is a milder version of Isaac. He is more a man of his craft than a true despiser of the human race. He never truly held any loyalty to anyone, just as humanity never really gave him reason to show loyalty to them. His journey begins as a Forgemaster for Dracula, just as Isaac was. His betrayals begin with Carmilla, who employs him to assist in overthrowing Dracula. This soon becomes a matter against his will when Carmilla takes him in as a slave and coerces him into forming her a massive army to take on the world.

Number Five: Lenore
Role: Diplomat
Species: Vampire
Coming in at number five of our most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the deceptive Lenore!
Lenore is the beautiful deceiver of the Styrian sisters. Like Sypha, Lenore may be wrongly assumed to be a timid and sweet woman. She uses her charms and ways of coercion to draw out what is wanted by her and her sisters. She is employed in the series to break down Hector into willingly crafting an army for Carmilla’s world conquest. She is in no way a push over though. When provoked, her other side is shown to be an equally dangerous vampire to that of her sisters.
Trust me at one point we see her beat Hector senseless…

Number Four: Alucard
Role: Vampire Hunter
Species: Dhampir
At number four among the most popular Castlevania characters of all time we have the vampire hybrid: Alucard!
Alucard, orginally named Adrian Tepes, is a very interesting character in the Castlevania series. He is the son of both a vampire, Vlad Tepes, and a human, Lisa Tepes. Alucard is a very sarcastic character that tends to butt heads with Trevor’s own sarcasm and bull-headedness. Alucard deep down is a lonely man who revels in the company of friends and compatriots. He is often seen in the throes of insanity when alone, wishing that someone would fill the void he feels inside when he is not travelling with his companions.

Number Three: Dracula
Role: Vampire Lord
Species: Vampire
Coming into the top 3 of the most popular Castlevania characters of all time we have the Lord of Darkness : Dracula!
Dracula is not simply the evil monster he’s been made out to be. He knew a deep love once in his wife, Lisa Tepes. It is in the death of his wife at the burning stake that drives Vlad Tepes to become the monster known as Dracula. It is a truly despairing story that has plagued the heart of Dracula and drives him to seek the total annihilation of the human race. At the hands of the very church which is supposed to spread peace to the world, his wife is burned as an evil sorceress. She was no more than an herbalist who showed love to a man that was once consumed by centuries of darkness. When Dracula’s light is taken from him, he sees no further point in trying to find any other light in the world.

Number Two: Trevor Belmont
Role: Monster Hunter
Species: Human
Coming in at number two among the most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the final Belmont of the era: Trevor Belmont!
Where do I even begin with this guy…
Trevor is a sarcastic prick of a vampire hunter that you just can’t stand not to love. In a way Trevor can understand the hatred of the church, as they were responsible for exiling his family from their lands. He has seen time and again how the church will destroy that which does not fall under their own beliefs and teachings. This left Trevor with bitter resentment of the general public. However, Trevor, deep down, is a very caring man who risks his life time and again to preserve humanity and save them from the darkness that plagues the land.

Coming in at number one of the most popular Castlevania characters of all time is the vicious queen: Carmilla!
You want to talk about a true vampire…
Carmilla is not a woman of small goals. She wishes to not simply take over the world as she knows it. No, she wants the literal domination of the entire world. She is a conqueror at heart who works with her sisters to plot and scheme to the ends of the Earth. Even as one plot begins to unfold, she is busy writing up the next story to her unending campaign. She is a brutal idealist who stops at nothing to bring her ideals to life. If it weren’t for the heroics that take place in the end, surprisingly at the very hands of Isaac, she may very well have been on her way to achieving her dark desires.
