The Most Powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters….
I’ve been thinking about this list for a while. It’s got a lot of the same characters from our list of The Most Popular Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters of All Time, but a few other characters from the series added in.
If you know anyone who grew up watching Nickelodeon, they’ll probably give you an hour-long lecture if you asked them what show was the best on the channel. Honestly, it’s tough to choose just one. But for me and my siblings, that show was definitively, Avatar: The Last Airbender. We would anxiously wait for 5 PM every Friday and Saturday when the weekly episode would be re-run.
It had everything we loved:
- Adventure (CHECK).
- Suspense (CHECK).
- Good vs. Evil (CHECK).
- Superpowers (FOUR ELEMENTS – CHECK x4).
Honestly, for a kids’ show, it was jam-packed with tons of great story arcs and had some of the best character development I’ve seen in any show.
The characters on the top ten deserve their slot, but I will admit that some of the characters are in a league of their own, as you’ll find out.
We have our Avatar Inspired Workouts in a mini-database within our larger Anime Workouts Database like we’ve now been able to do for a handful of the most popular shows.
We even have an Avatar: The Last Airbender Workout Placement Quiz considering you guys in The SHJ Army love it so much.
If you like listicles like this one, here are a few more I think you might like:
- The Most Popular Netflix Castlevania Characters
- The Most Popular Anime of All Time
- The Top Ten Young Justice Character Workouts
Of course we’ve also done a handful of “Most Powerful” and “Most Popular” for other anime so if you’d like to check those out you can visit our other listicles here.
For this one I scoured the internet for help and almost every single list ranking had a very similar take on who the most powerful Avatar characters were, with just one or two characters replaced. So, I decided to compile ALL of them together and place each character in the slot they averaged most as well as keeping the list to base TEN most powerful and then increasing the length of the normal runner-up slots I normally do in no specific order.
As always, leave your comments below if you were expecting other characters!
TOP 10 MOST POWERFUL AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER CHARACTERS
Number Ten: Avatar Kyoshi
Race: Earth Kingdom
Hero or Villain: Hero
Starting off our list of The Most Powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters of All Time we have the Earthbending Avatar, and founder of Kyoshi Island – Avatar Kyoshi!
I mean, are you powerful enough to bend the earth that you can separate from the mainland and form your own island?
Well me neither. BUT, That’s exactly what Avatar Kyoshi’s known for. In the few short segments that we get to see her in action in the show, she stands up to Chin the Conqueror, and in a feat of amazing Avatar power, bends the earth itself and pushes her village and territory away from the main Earth Kingdom. This action directly leads to the creation of the Kyoshi Warriors, who are the Kyoshi Island’s protectors and Elite guard.
Do you agree with Kyoshi’s placement in the top ten or would you push her down to the honorable mentions and bring someone else up into his slot?
Avatar Kyoshi at SHJ:
Number Nine: Avatar Roku
Race: Fire Nation
Hero or Villain: Hero
Coming in at number nine on the list of the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters of all time is Aang’s predecessor from the Fire Nation, Avatar Roku!
Avatar Roku is a Fire Nation citizen who was friends with the previous Fire Lord, Sozin. When Sozin decided to try to expand the Fire Nation and take control of the other three nations, Roku did his best to stop him from going on such a bloody path. However, Sozin never backed down and Roku had to fight him – but not before Sozin issued the order to attack the rest of the nations and start the 100-year war.
Avatar Roku at SHJ:
Number Eight: Zuko
Race: Fire Nation
Hero or Villain: Anti-Villain
At number eight among the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters of all time is our second member of the Fire Nation.
Prince Zuko is the son of Fire Lord Ozai, and grandson to Fire Lord Sozin. When Zuko speaks out of turn during a war council meeting, he is challenged by his father to Agni Kai – their form of a gunfight – but with fire bending. Zuko loses, and his father banishes him and tells him not to return without the Avatar in chains.
Zuko actually has the most interesting character arc. He starts of as a disgraced son, becomes a fighting vigilante, and then joins the Avatar in his quest to save the world – eventually becoming a hero and close friends with the Avatar himself.
Zuko at SHJ:
Number Seven: Azula
Race: Fire Nation
Hero or Villain: Villain
Next up among our most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters of all time is Princess Azula!
While there are some characters on this list that I had a really hard time placing, Azula needs no justification. A child prodigy at fire bending, she mastered both fire bending and lightning bending at the age of 14. She is one of the fiercest fire benders in the Fire Nation, and one of the cruelest.
When Zuko and Iroh left the Fire Nation and settled in Ba Sing Se, Ozai sent Azula and her friends to capture them and bring them back. Azula is not only a master fire bender, but a gifted martial artist. One feat that I especially feel embodies this is her ability to run on the cable of the Boiling Rock and then back flip onto the gondola that Sokka and Zuko were escaping on.
Azula at SHJ:
Number Six: Katara
Race: Southern Water Tribe
Hero or Villain: Hero
Just missing the top five and coming in at number six among the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters is Katara of the Water Tribe. Katara is the lone water bender in the Southern Water Tribe, after her father and the other warriors leave to fight in the 100-year war. She and her brother Sokka are the ones who discover Avatar Aang trapped in ice.
What starts out as an incidental discovery for the siblings turns out to be the adventure of a life time. Through it all, Katara grows in her friendship with Aang, and in her abilities as a water bender. She learns from Pakku of the Northern Water Tribe, and becomes a Master Water bender and Aang’s instructor in water bending. She is the only one known to have mastered water, ice, and healing during her time.
Katara at SHJ:
Number Five: Bumi
Race: Earth Kingdom
Hero or Villain: Hero
Making it to the top five among the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters of all time is Aang’s childhood friend and the King of Omashu – Bumi!
Bumi was Aang’s friend when he was still a young Air Acolyte (Air Apprentice?) who lived in Omashu, a city in the Earth Kingdom. Bumi would come up with crazy ideas and even shared his dream with Aang – a slide delivery system that could carry food and supplies to his whole city. 100 years later, Aang reunites with Bumi as an old man – old but not helpless.
In the last 100 years, Bumi became the King of Omashu, and helped Aang on his journey by directing him to his earth bending teacher – Toph. Later on, it’s revealed that Bumi is also a member of the White Lotus, an organization seeking to bring an end to the 100-year war.
Bumi at SHJ:
Number Four: Toph
Race: Earth Kingdom
Hero or Villain: Hero
At number four among the most powerful Naruto characters of all time we move into a legendary Earth-bending champion – Toph Beifong aka The Blind Bandit!
Toph Beifong is the sole daughter of the influential Earth Kingdom family, the Beifongs. Though blind, she nonetheless has mastered earthbending and is undoubtedly one of the strongest benders in the Avatar universe – even learning how to sand-bend and inventing the bending extension of metal-bending.
Most of the lists I came across did place her consistently in the Top 5.
Toph Beifong at SHJ:
Number Three: Iroh
Race: Fire Nation
Hero or Villain: Hero
Coming in and making the top three among the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters is the Dragon of the West, Iroh of the Fire Nation!
While he does have this fearsome title, Iroh is anything but. He is a kind old man who loves tea and playing paisho. He accompanies his nephew Zuko when he is banished by his father, and aids him in his search for the Avatar. During their journey, they develop an especially close bond, and he and Zuko eventually open a tea shop in Ba Sing Se.
However, he is #3 on this list because despite his non-violent personality, he isn’t helpless. He is also a formidable fire bender, and is the Grand Master of the Order of the White Lotus. During the final battle against Fire Lord Ozai, The White Lotus, led by Iroh, frees Ba Sing Se from Fire Nation control and roots out the Fire Nation soldiers from the city.
Iroh at SHJ:
Number Two: Fire Lord Ozai
Race: Fire Nation
Hero or Villain: Villain
Coming in at number two among the most powerful Avatar: The Last Airbender characters is Fire Lord Ozai (or Phoenix King Ozai).
Ozai is the brother of Iroh of the Fire Nation, and the father of Zuko and Azula. He is a formidable fighter and is capable of projecting lightning from his finger tips (very much like Palpatine) and can manipulate fire bending in a way few can. He uses the flames from his hands to gain the ability to fly. How about that?
He’s in #2 because even with the use of the four elements, Aang had some trouble blocking his flames and attacks. It’s only after accessing his Avatar State that Aang is able to turn the tide and defeat Ozai.
Fire Lord Ozai at SHJ:
Fire Lord Ozai Workout Routine
Number One: Avatar Aang
Race: Air Nomads
Hero or Villain: Hero
Coming in at number one among the most powerful Naruto characters of all time is Avatar Aang!
Avatar Aang was just a 12-year old kid when he was chosen as Roku’s successor as Avatar. Scared, he ran away from the Air Nomad temple and was trapped in ice for 100 years. Because of his absence, the Fire Nation was able to take hold on much of the other three nations. Upon awakening, Aang wants nothing to do but have fun. However, with Sokka and Katara’s guidance and friendship, he begins the process of learning the four elements of bending and eventually defeats Ozai and ends the war.
One skill I think that makes Aang so powerful, and solidifies his position in #1, is that he has the ability to take away another person’s bending ability. This is how he ends the 100-year war and starts all nations on the path of peace, and fulfills his destiny.
Would you place Aang at number one or does Ozai give him a run for her money?
Who else would you pull from the honorable mentions to bring up to this list?

But I’d also love to hear who YOU think should be on this list!
