It’s time for our third soccer sensation.
If you couldn’t tell, it’s a trend this week.
We’ve already seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar’s workout routine and diet plans, but now it’s time for Messi.
I’m going to be completely honest with you guys: besides David Beckham, the only three soccer players I used to be able to name are Ronaldo, Neymar and Messi.
That’s okay, though…right?
But, we couldn’t have Ronaldo and Neymar without Messi. Messi is one of the best in the world, and by many, regarded as THE best to ever play.
Lionel Messi Stats:
Height: 5’7
Weight: (approximate) 159 lbs.
Age: 31 years old
Both Messi and Neymar are in our shortest range among celebs we’ve had at SHJ.
And Messi is about two inches shorter than Neymar.
This range consists of guys like Zac Efron, KJ Apa, Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Holland and more.
The average height is anywhere from 6’1-6’3 with celebs like Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, Chris Evans, Adam Driver, Stephen Amell, Clive Standen and so many more.
And, even taller than them are guys like The Mountain, Dwayne Johnson, Joe Manganiello, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Winston Duke, Alexander Skarsgard and a few others.
But, don’t worry either way.
I write these routines to be utilized by any shape and size.

Lionel Messi Diet and Nutrition
Ronaldo and Neymar both think of food as fuel for the body.
Lionel Messi is no different.
When you’re one of the world’s top athletes, that tends to be the course of thinking.
While they all like to utilize carbohydrates to fuel their grueling training, they’re choosing the right carbs, and still sticking to a high protein diet as well.
We even saw Neymar have a “magic potion” that was a protein shake two times a day.
In an interview with Independent, they tell us this about Messi’s diet:
The nutritionist identified five key foods – water, good quality olive oil, whole grains, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables – as the foundation of the Argentina international’s diet.
“Also very good are nuts and seeds,” Poser said, but he has warned his client off sugar. “It is the worst thing for the muscles. The farther he stays away from sugars, the better.
“Refined flours are also a big problem as these days, it’s difficult to find uncontaminated wheat,” he added.
Choosing the RIGHT carbohydrates is often times hard.
But, that’s why our Academy Nutrition Classes (Samurais, Spartans, Greek Gods, Monks, SuperHumans, Minimalists, Hunter Gatherers, Vikings) revolve around finding the most sustainable diet; the diet that works for YOU!
So while we analyze the diets of these top athletes, it’s also important to recognize that there is other options.
And, we’ve seen a lot at SHJ.
So take some time to check out the Nutrition Pillars, read about intermittent fasting, calorie counting, and all the other things we’ve discussed and utilized.
We see a lot of celebs opt for a sustainable approach like this.
That’s why our Academy Nutrition Classes (Monks, Minimalists, SuperHumans, Vikings, Spartans, Hunter Gatherers, Greek Gods, Samurais) revolve around helping you find the specific diet that is right FOR YOU.
Of course, there are a lot of reasons to HAVE the strict guidelines.
We’ve seen a lot of celebs opt for specific restrictions.
For example: Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals, Hugh Jackman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Terry Crews utilize intermittent fasting(something I use daily as well), Mustafa Shakir and Madelaine Petsch are vegans, Brandon Routh and Frank Grillo opt for paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
And, that’s just to name a few celebs from each, by the way.
You can check out our Nutrition Pillars for more information and articles on all of the above and more.

Lionel Messi Workout Routine Research
The first two workout routines (Neymar and Ronaldo) also revolved around weights and other forms of training.
For this one, I will program you some cardiovascular type movements, but I’m also going to be programming it like you’re training for soccer.
In an article from ESPN they discuss Messi’s speed and agility, and give us:
“The best in the world right now is Lionel Messi,” says Craig Friedman, performance innovation team director at Athletes’ Performance, a company specializing in the enhancement of athletic performance. “He’s faster with the ball at his feet than the defenders are without the ball.”
But where does this extraordinary quickness come from? According to Friedman, who designs and implements performance training systems for pro and elite athletes and served as a performance specialist for the German National Soccer Team during their third-place finish at the 2006 World Cup, speed and agility on the field relies on three basic elements.
Which they continue with:
“First you have to be explosive and powerful,” Friedman says. “Then, you have to be stable enough through your ankles, hips and torso to be able to deliver that power efficiently into the ground. And finally, you have to deliver the power into the ground in the right direction, and that’s where technique comes in.” Needless to say, the 5-foot-6 Messi excels in all three areas.
“He’s a small guy,” Friedman says, “but his rate of force development is very high and his power-to-weight ratio is just ridiculous.”
And, thankfully for us, they even give us some workouts that I will pair with some other sources I think are useful.
