This Top 5 Listicle is going to be a bit different than what we are used to seeing.
We’ve had The Top 5 Protein Powder Supplements, The Top 5 Pre-Workout Supplements, and even The Top 5 Multivitamin Supplements.
But now it’s time for The Top 5 Weight Management Supplements.
If you want to learn more about nutrition and all things dietary awesomeness (which would be great to help with your weight management, right..?!) here at SHJ you can check out our Nutrition Pillars to get started.
And we also have a list of all our articles that are based around our fitness equipment and supplement lists here.
But alright, alright, let’s get on with the main topic here.
Weight management SUPPLEMENTS.
Normally in our listicles I would be 1-5 of the top supplements (or rather the company/product) for that given supplement type.
In this article we’re actually going to be talking about supplement TYPES and then I will be giving you a mini-list of the best products within those types.
If that’s confusing, don’t worry, it’ll make sense in just a bit.
Normally I break down exactly how I’m going to be ranking my list (you know with things like taste, effectiveness, pricing, etc.), but the ordering of these supplements is by NO means based on overall effectiveness or price, and definitely not taste.
Rather, the order of these supplement TYPES are actually just random and how I decide to lay them out; but the actual mini listicles I’ll add within each will be broken down by those categories I named (usually effectiveness and price of the products).
**PSA: I do want to mention before we go into this list: I will make reference to certain supplements that will help put you in a caloric surplus OR help keep you in a caloric deficit; none of these supplements, however, will allow you to lose weight without being in a deficit. They CAN help make sure that weight loss is fat and not muscle loss; but will not burn calories for you.**
1. CLA Supplements
Hopefully you read the above PSA and also the part where I said the overall list of “types” of supplements isn’t in any specific order.
That being said: first on the list is CLA!
WebMD tells us about CLA supplements here:
CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in meat and dairy products. It is also a popular dietary supplement that is sold with claims of helping people lose fat, maintain weight loss, retain lean muscle mass, and control type 2 diabetes — the type of diabetes that is often associated with obesity.
As you can see, they don’t make any mention to the supplement actually causing you to lose weight.
It can, however, HELP you lose fat, maintain weight loss, and retain muscle mass during your fat loss.
That being said, here are some of my top picks for CLA supplements on the market right now:
So if you’re looking for some help with supporting your metabolism and losing fat instead of muscle (another thing that can help is making sure you’re not TOO far into a deficit, and also maintaining enough protein to maintain your muscle mass), then CLA might be for you.
2. L-Carnitine Supplements
Next on the list is a supplement that is similar to the function of CLA: L-Carnitine.
Rather than promoting fat loss and muscle retention through a boost in metabolism (although what I’m about to tell you is essentially a boost to your metabolism), WebMD tells us that L-Carnitine helps with energy burn.
Here’s some overview information on L-Carnitine Supplements from WebMD:
L-carnitine is an amino acid that is produced in the body. L-carnitine helps the body turn fat into energy. The body can convert L-carnitine to other amino acids called acetyl-L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine.
And, if your next question is whether or not you can take both L-Carnitine AND CLA, the answer is yes.
That being said, here are some of my top picks for L-Carninite supplements on the market right now:
- Evlution L-Carnitine
- ProSupps L-CarnitineÂ
- NOW Supps L-Carnitine
So for the same reasons you’d decide to start using CLA, L-Carninitine is another potential buy to add to the list in order to support healthy fat loss.
3. Mass Gainer Supplements
Pat of weight management is also for those of you who are looking to GAIN weight.
So if you’re looking for weight-loss management go ahead and skip this one and move onto number four, which will definitely help you.
Mass Gain supplements are a nice way for people who have a hard time eating in a surplus of calories to tack on some extra through the use of thick, high calorie shakes (by adding these powders).
That being said, here are some of my top picks for Mass Gain Supplements on the market right now:
People can often forget that others actually have a hard time GAINING weight as well, so I thought it was important to also hit that side of the scope.
If you’re not one of those people, that’s okay; the rest of this list is extremely helpful (oh, and people who need to gain LEAN mass can also use all these other supplements as well).
4. Protein Powders
This one is possibly the most powerful on the list.
Protein powders allow you to do a few things:
- They allow you to hit your protein goals and keep your protein intake high enough to support muscle retention during weight loss and muscle gains during weight gain.
- They allow you to keep your calories lower while hitting said protein intake.
- Because of 1 and 2 they in turn free up calories to allow you to indulge and create a more sustainable diet.
That being said, here are some of my top picks for Protein Powder Supplements on the market right now:
Obviously this is a supplement that most people reading this list will already be utilizing.
The three protein powder’s above are also the top three out of five on my Top Five Protein Powders Listicle.
5. Caffeine
Here’s one you might not have expected as much as you didn’t expect to see mass gainers make this list.
Caffeine is probably the most utilized on this entire list, but not specifically for the reason we’re going to be talking about.
Mayo Clinic tells us this is how caffeine helps us lose weight:
Caffeine may reduce feelings of hunger and your desire to eat for a brief time. Calorie burning. Caffeine appears to increase energy use even when you’re at rest. It stimulates thermogenesis — one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food.
That being said, here are some of my top picks for Protein Powder Supplements on the market right now:
- Coffee
- Monster Ultra Energy Drink
- Tea
Obviously there are A LOT of other options, but these are the three that I use most often.
I actually use these more than I utilize pre-workout!
And there you have it.
The Top 5 Weight Management Supplements!
I’m going to repeat my PSA one last time before I head out (from above in case you missed it):
**PSA: I do want to mention before we go into this list: I will make reference to certain supplements that will help put you in a caloric surplus OR help keep you in a caloric deficit; none of these supplements, however, will allow you to lose weight without being in a deficit. They CAN help make sure that weight loss is fat and not muscle loss; but will not burn calories for you.**
