One thing I notice most among beginners is the yearning to make fitness and nutrition “sexy”.
Whether that’s the journey to unlock The Super Soldier Serum (which is a actually a big topic we’ll talk about), or just the fact that it’s human nature to want to imitate the people we follow that seem to be doing these crazy training methods – it can be easy to fall into the rabbit hole of over-complication.
This happens the most with beginners adapting to their new environment for a few different reasons, expanding on what I just mentioned above, and more often than not you’ll see a curve in which people start out with what they feel is a “basic” workout and then over-complicate by the time they’re around the intermediate level (“learning” for a period of time to get to intermediate, of course), and then the curve moves back down to a basic level again once they continue their learning and move onto more of an “advanced” level.
We’ve seen it here among hundreds of different celebrities in our Workout Database whose programs look “basic” to some people, when in reality it is allowing them to transform into the superhumans we see in our favorite movies.
Let’s take a look at the curve and see a visual of what I’m actually talking about…
This can give a much more clear understanding about what I mean when I take us through the levels at which beginners tend to go through before realizing you don’t have to overcomplicate your training methodology.
But before we talk more about why this happens, I do want to give you some resources you can utilize to train without over complications and complexity.
Some of the Core Articles here at SHJ break down just how you can shred fat, build muscle and unleash your inner superhuman – without making fitness suck.
Here are some you should definitely read if you’re new here:
- The Four Key Components of Your Transformation
- The Two Main Reasons You Can’t Lose Weight or Gain Muscle
- SHJ Cheat Meals and Indulgence Guide
And of course there are a ton of other awesome articles you should be reading here, which is why I put together this page of all our Must Read Articles, that I’ll continue to add to as we get more and more pillar articles really breaking down training to become a superhuman [without the suck].
But for now I want to talk about:
- Why you don’t have to overcomplicate your workout and diet to become a superhuman (with proof).
- Big reasons why people think you have to overcomplicate your workout and diet (make it sexy), and WANT to think they have to.
- How you’re going to avoid doing it in the future and focus on sustainability and what really matters.
That was basically like a badass spoiler-filled trailer for a movie – I gave it all to you – you can just trust me with that breakdown now and head out super happy or you can keep reading.
Totally up to you.
Why You Don’t Have To Overcomplicate Your Workout and Diet To Become a Superhuman
I have now researched hundreds and hundreds of celebrity workout routines and diets – and even wrote a book about it called Superhuman Secrets that breaks down dozens of case studies, training methodology, and why we use the pillars we utilize within our Core Systems.
But I should tell you this: I was just like everyone else when I first started SHJ.
I wanted to find the *sexy* routine that these celebrities must have unlocked right next to The Fountain of Youth and pair it with The Super Soldier Serum that I would surely find next.
So I began researching these celebrities, the world’s top performers and athletes, and the world’s all-around most elite.
And guess what I found….
The elite may damn well be busting their ass before a role to really chisel up and show off what they’ve earned through long hard work similar to the way a bodybuilder has his final few weeks of prep leading up to a show – but these are the people who are sustaining their health and physiques because they know there’s no secret.
They’re working hard and remembering at the end of the day they’re still human.
Don’t Overcomplicate Your Nutrition
The reason I began testing cheat meals and indulgences within our 4-Tier-Nutrition System (utilized in our Academy and Core Systems) is because after researching The Top Diets Used By Celebrities and really breaking down all the research I had done over the course of YEARS, I realized that the majority of these celebrities were NOT using some complex system, and were actually indulging way more often than we think.
We even have a full article on celebrity cheat meals, and I’m sure many of you have seen guys like Dwayne Johnson put down their famous/favorite big meals at the end of a long week.
Now we utilize DAILY indulgences within our system that allow for members to have “free calories” and pillars that can be entirely build around (some members choose to be vegans, while others choose to follow a Paleo diet approach and most, like me, choose to just adhere to the main pillars with no restrictions).
You can learn all about that within the cheat meal and indulgence article I shared above, but in reality you should be learning more about our Nutrition Pillars [4-Tier-Nutrition System] by reading up about it here on the site, or even taking our SHJ Nutrition System Course that is free within our Academy.
I can, and have, written full articles on why you don’t have to overcomplicate your nutrition, so we won’t go into much more depth than simply pointing you in the right direction of more resources to prove it – but if you’re ever feeling like your diet sucks I want you to know that you might be (and probably are, actually) overcomplicating it.
Don’t Overcomplicate Your Workout Routine
There’s a good chance if you’re at that novice level of training and you’re overcomplicating it a bit that I train less than you.
I keep my programming super simple and effective.
The workouts you find here on the site are the same workouts I utilize by taking them and plugging them into our Upgrade Calculators within The Academy.
All that does is give me a full breakdown of specifically programmed weight or rep counts to adhere to for each lift broken down by traditional pyramid training, reverse pyramid training, straight sets, supersets, circuits, and more.
And while that might sound complicated at first glance, it’s really not.
Actually, it’s plug and play with over 1,000 workouts now inside our Workout Database, and completely optional.
I choose to do it because it adds a layer of accountability and forces me to continue moving forward in my progressive overload (which, as we know, is a layer of our Four Key Components of our Transformation).
Outside of that, you can basically find my training right here on the site, or by using our 90 Day Core Systems either individually or within The Academy.
But when did I realize I didn’t need to overcomplicate my training methods?…
Over and over I was noticing that I would see guys like Chris Pratt, Michael B. Jordan, and even Dwayne Johnson using the same lifts as everyone else – with the same program structure as everyone else.
So…how is it that they look so much damn better than everyone else?!
Well, one, nutrition is a HUGE factor in this and they’re highly motivated (which tends to happen when you know millions of people will be watching come showtime) and strict with their diets.
When you flip the script and see some of the “newbie” actors who made insane transformations like Rob McElhenney, Paul Rudd and Kumail Nanjiani we also learn that these guys had an EXTREMELY restrictive diet, to the point where they made jokes about how crazy it was and life consuming.
Ironically enough they’re all comedians, so maybe that has something to do with it – but I don’t want you to think that it’s all easy peasy lemon squeezy – because dieting CAN suck if you try to dive right in and get shredded in 3 months without easing your way into it and finding what specifically works FOR YOU (which is one of the reasons so many people fail when they get full programmed meal plans for them telling them exactly what to eat).
Reason two is that these guys (the celebs and top performers that are killing it) show up!
One of our The Main Two Reasons People Can’t Lose Weight that I linked to before is adherence.
Adherence is following your programming and nutrition and not cheating.
You know what makes following a program and nutrition plan easy? When it doesn’t suck.
So I saw hundreds and hundreds of these celebrities utilizing routines that were very basic and using the same formatting that we use every day in the gym (we being members of The SHJ Army who have been training for a bit) – and finally the Four Key Components really began to click.
Fitness doesn’t have to suck.
If you don’t believe me yet you can take a look for yourself through the hundreds and hundreds of Celebrity Workouts that even have tons of athletes and the world’s most elite in there – but for now I think it’s time to talk about the WHYS so that we can avoid them ourselves.
Why Do People Overcomplicate Their Fitness and Nutrition?
There are a couple reasons why people tend to overcomplicate their fitness and nutrition and I want to break those reasons down not to expose them, but to help avoid them by acknowledging them.
If you found Superhero Jacked it’s likely because you were searching for a celebrity workout or even to train like one of your favorite superheroes or anime characters.
Which is absolutely incredible because now you’ve been able to find a home where fitness doesn’t have to suck and we can cut through the bullsh*t together and unleash our inner superhumans and motivate each other with fun programming around our favorite shows and movies.
BUT, it also shows one of the reasons we can tend to overcomplicate things…
As humans we have an innate habit to imitate the people we admire.
The powerful, the most followed, etc.
This has been made very clear with social media platforms and has led to a lot more than simply overcomplicating fitness and nutrition.
The people we follow on social platforms need your attention, and there are MILLIONS of people trying to grab our attention all at the same time – so how are they supposed to do that?
Well, they need to make what they are doing more appealing and attractive (more *sexy*).
It’s the same reason you see some social influencers only posting the good and sexy parts of their lives and you never see the bad.
That’s not sexy. That’s not appealing.
So they do exercises and follow programs you’ve never seen or heard of and chalk it up as the next best thing since sliced bread.
Now that’s not to say those things don’t work – they may very well work – but is it necessary to complicate the movements and continuously find new exercises and program styles that no one has ever seen before?
No.
Which, summed up a bit more comes down to: there’s a lot of misinformation out there, and everyone wants to fight for your attention with the most appealing, sexy and different point of view.
At the end of the day, I promise fitness does not need to suck and it does not need to be overcomplicated.
So this is first reason people sometimes feel the need to overcomplicate their training and nutrition.
BUT, the second reason is actually more the reason than any other…
The MAIN Reason People Overcomplicate Their Fitness and Nutrition
I’m going to tell you what the main reason is right off the bat, and you might not believe it at first, but I’ll explain more…I promise.
The MAIN reason people overcomplicate their fitness and nutrition is because they think it really can’t be that simple.
If fitness and nutrition is as simple as showing up and adhering to the program, then why isn’t everyone doing it!?!
So instead they chalk it up as this actor using Super Soldier Serum, this one having a private chef, that one doing this, and that one doing that.
When in reality you have guys like James McAvoy showing up for his role in Mr. Glass after looking up a simple 5×5 training regime and … just doing it…!
And, would it surprise you if I told you the most common fitness and nutrition systems among the most elite women are:
- Classes (Yoga, SPIN, Pilates, etc.), Very Basic Circuit/Weight Training and Endurance Work
- “Healthy” Choices (Eating within Caloric Ranges but not prioritizing any specific restrictions)
It surprises a lot of people.
So we go out and search for something sexy that can explain why we aren’t seeing the same results, because there HAS to be a piece of the puzzle that is missing.
We are made to believe that fitness has to suck.
Everyone wants it to be this #24/7Grind community that means we have to constantly be training, working and “grinding” in order to achieve what we want in life.
And while we do need to be motivated, the message that it has to be a grind couldn’t be further from the truth.
What Is The Answer?
Well step one of the answer was reading this article and step two is using the resources I’ve provided you to take action and start unleashing your inner superhuman.
The resources I provide here at SHJ always adhere to fitness and nutrition without the suck.
We believe sustainability is key and we strive to cut through the bullsh*t in the fitness industry to make sure you know that YOU CAN unleash your inner superhuman.
If you are struggling, do this:
- Take a step back and re-evaluate. Have you done enough reading and learning with these resources? Are you fully adhering to your program and nutrition?
- Re-read through The Four Key Components, Two Main Reasons for Failure and possibly all of our Must Read Articles and keep learning and adapting.
- Consider joining our Academy to get direct access to me and our other members for more help with your specific programming.
Remember: we live in a world that WANTS to overcomplicate it for you.
Overcomplicated can sometimes be misconstrued as sexy and appealing. The more different and complicated the approach, the more it might seem like that person has unlocked some secret no one else has found just yet.
Pretty good marketing if you ask me!
If there are are few key points you should take from this it’s that:
- Fitness doesn’t have to suck.
- Simple DOES NOT mean inneffective.
- The best thing you can do is show up.
Oh, and if you’re ready to get started but not quite ready to join us inside one of our Core Programs you can head over to our Workout Database and Nutrition Pillars to begin learning about the best programming for you.
You can even take one of our Workout Placement Quizzes if you need help choosing the best workout specifically for you 🙂
