I normally stick to 2 blog posts a week [Mon/Thurs], but today I had a brain blast and decided to throw up a quick article.
That’s not to say that you shouldn’t read it though, because we can all benefit from this list!
The first two things are the obvious, but I know I can’t make a list of the FIVE things and then not include them. Â That being said, we’ll also touch on some things that might not seem obvious to the everyday person.
Some people think training and nutrition (damn it, now the cats out of the bag) are the two things you focus on and then you’re suddenly healthy. Â While these two things are HUGE factors, there are some other things that I constantly strive to improve.
But, for now, let’s get started with the obvious:
1. Working Out
Duh…
Alright, settle down. Â We love working out, obviously, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not constantly improving my routine. Â I try my best to stick to the most functional movements to avoid injury, but I also strive to peak my performance.
I’ve talked a little about this in my about me, but for those of you who don’t know – I’ve kind of been around the block when it comes to my fitness styles.
By this, I mean I’ve dabbled in tons of different styles: bodybuilding, powerlifting, CrossFit, running…
Through this process some people might think I seem a little all over the place, but actually I’ve benefited from it because I’m now able to see fitness through a whole new lens. Â Fitness to me is something more then just lifting the heaviest weights, or looking the best (although I still want to look awesome), or running the fastest….It’s now become a combination of all of these things.
I now strive to customize my program to not only focus on one goal, but I am able to hit them [strengths and weaknesses] all to increase my overall performance.
2. Nutrition
Another obvious one, eh?
Nutrition is a tricky ball game. Â New research, studies and nutritional facts are constantly coming to light. Â For that reason, I’m also constantly learning and improving my dieting techniques.
Currently I’m following the SuperHuman Diet, which is a combination of a few things we discuss on the site.
I follow paleo combined with intermittent fasting, and cyclical keto, all in sync with my Bulletproof coffee to get the best of all worlds! Â I can literally sit here and write a whole book about this topic (which I have!!!), and for that reason we’ll do a quick wrap-up!
Some people don’t realize that nutrition is actually 75% (if not more) of your fitness battle. Â You can’t out-run or lift your nutrition. Â You may be able to use some types of dieting techniques that seem to be working in unison with being able to eat whatever you want, but…they are more then likely setting you back in other areas of performance.
3. Sleep Health
This one is SO HUGE, and mainly because people completely overlook it. Â
Proper sleep can not only make or break your hormones levels, but in turn that can change your weight gain/loss and so many other things related to performance and cognitive function. Â So yes, that means every morning when you step on the scale you could be cursing your personal trainers workout routine or your current nutrition regime; when in reality it could be your sleep.
I know….crazy!
Sleep is literally like a free and legal hack to improving your testosterone levels! (And yes ladies, you use testosterone too!)
Instead of going in depth and trying to convince you of the importance of sleep health, tracking sleep and making sure you’re getting into deep sleep…I’ll just direct you HERE. Â This recent article will do all the convincing for me and even teach you how you can improve it.
4. Meditation
I’ll admit it, I’m still a complete noob at meditation.
But, hey, that’s why this article is about constant improvements. Â I know the benefits I can receive from meditation and I will continue to get better.
Just incase you don’t know these benefits yet let’s steal some from ArtofLiving:
On a physical level, meditation:
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks
- Decreases any tension-related pain, such as, tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems
- Increases serotonin production that improves mood and behavior
- Improves the immune system
- Increases the energy level, as you gain an inner source of energy
Mental Benefits with regular practice of meditation:
- Anxiety decreases
- Emotional stability improves
- Creativity increases
- Happiness increases
- Intuition develops
- Gain clarity and peace of mind
- Problems become smaller
- Meditation sharpens the mind by gaining focus and expands through relaxation
- A sharp mind without expansion causes tension, anger and frustration
- An expanded consciousness without sharpness can lead to lack of action/progress
- The balance of a sharp mind and an expanded consciousness brings perfection
But, let me just grab some of the benefits out that I’m already striving for. Â These include, but are not limited to, creativity, happiness (which we’ll even discuss more of), better sleep and recovery. Â This is a bit simplified, but I’ve always loved the KISS method! [Keep It Simple Stupid!]
5. Positivity
Not only have I recently made it a point to improve my meditation, but I’ve also been working on my positivity throughout the day. Â It’s proven to be pretty huge!
This can tie into a lot of different things, but more importantly, I try to immediately start my day right. Â I’ve been doing this by incorporating my five-minute journaling each morning. Â This allows me to set and map goals, recap “wins” big or small, and just get my day ready to be my biotch! Â Excuse my french.
I also use this to my advantage when it comes to my nutrition. Â I’ve talked about having “Hulk-Like Self Control” and another thing that helps is my positive attitude. Â If I cheat on my diet, not only is it already mapped into my regime (accounted for in The SuperHuman Diet), but I also don’t immediately feel down on myself….which can eventually lead people to quitting!
And finally, positivity is also good for your stress/cortisol levels which are a huge factor in your weight and physique!  So, if I didn’t sell you in the first couple paragraphs, I hope this one will force you to become more positive! 🙂
What are you constantly improving? Â I’d love to hear from everyone, especially if there is something that needs to be added to this list! Â
