Bleach is an anime all about battle, strength, and perseverance. Naturally, as such, it has been making its way onto SHJ and has inspired several workouts on the site. Now it’s time we take a look at the strength of all the series’ characters and see who stands out as the greatest of all time.
An Bleach Inspired Workout Database is now available for Bleach within our expansive Workout Database on SHJ! Soon we hope to also be bringing you a Workout Quiz as well to help you find the best character for your current fitness goals.
Many characters in the series deserve recognition, but only 12 shall be chosen. However, I will be sure to throw in some runner-ups as well.
If you like listicles like this one, here are a few more I think you might like:
- Top 10 Most Powerful DC Characters Of All Time
- Top 10 Most Powerful Marvel Characters Of All Time
- Most Powerful Netflix Castlevania Characters
Of course we’ve also done a handful more “Most Powerful” and “Most Popular” for other anime so if you’d like to check those out you can visit our other listicles here.
For this one we scoured the internet for help and almost every single listicle has a different take on who the most powerful Bleach characters are. So what we decided to do was compile ALL of them together and then took the average of all the compiled ratings and placed them in their slot accordingly. Additional characters who did not make it in the top twelve that we want to mention as well can be seen in the runner-up section.
As always, leave your comments below if you were expecting other characters!
MOST POWERFUL BLEACH CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME
Number Twelve: Kisuke Urahara
Starting off our list of the most powerful Bleach characters is the creator of the Research Division: Kisuke Urahara!
Go ahead and underestimate this simple shop owner…
Kisuke comes off as an optimistic and relaxed simple shop owner. However, deep down there is a hardened veteran who was once captain of one of the Soul Reaper Divisions. He is deceptively cunning and has become a master of several combat techniques, making him a fierce and versatile warrior. He is dangerous in unarmed combat as well as a highly skilled swordsman. He is highly proficient in the arts of Kido, making him basically a battlemage-like character. His Zanpakuto, Benihime, possesses both mid-range attack capability and basic defensive capabilities which can shield Kisuke from imminent harm. Though only twelve on this list, Kisuke is no pushover and should be regarded warily.

Number Eleven: Uryu Ishida
Coming in at number eleven of our most powerful Bleach characters is the bow-master Quincy: Uryu Ishida!
I am a personal fan of his second bow, Ginrei Kojaku…
Uryu is a split dynamic, being a melodramatic character, but also being a combatant that is able to stay calm under pressure. He is a master with the use of a spirit bow, though it is seen at times that he has proficiency with a blade as well when manipulating Reishi. One particular ability to note, Antithesis, allows Uryu to trade places with an opponent, leaving any wounds inflicted on himself on his enemy and trading places with them, absorbing their own current condition. Uryu is also able to protect himself from projectile attacks by firing his arrows with precise amounts of power to negate the attack.

Number Ten: Toshiro Hitsugaya
At number ten amongst the most powerful Bleach characters is the man of ice: Toshiro Hitsugaya!
He’s not actually that cold… I’m just referring to his sweet ice dragon.
Toshiro is a mature and serious individual who deeply cares for those near to him. He wields an ice based Zanpakuto that emits a dragon from its blade, which Toshiro can use to extend his attack range considerably. He is capable of freezing the very air around him and manipulating water molecules in the nearby vicinity. His Bankai, Daiguren Hyorinmaru, gives him a dragon-like cloak which can form a strong defense barrier around him as well as give him the ability to strike his opponent and freeze them solid, then being able to shatter them as if they were ice themselves.

Number Nine: Byakuya Kuchiki
Coming in at number nine of the most powerful Bleach characters is the infinite blade: Byakuya Kuchiki!
Now Byakuya, he is a man of cold resolve who holds a strong regard for his duty. He wields a Zanpakuto which, as his command phrase suggests, scatters his katana blade into a thousand pieces which he can control at will from the hilt. At times, its as if he sends out tendrils of small daggers at his opponent, and at other times like a wave crashing over them. While leaving him at a defensive disadvantage, his Bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, wields a mighty offensive capability. Forming thousands of complete blades which form a wall around him and his opponent, which constantly rotate, it disorients his enemies and leaves them unsure of when and where the next strike may come from.

Number Eight: Shunsui Kyoraku
At number eight among the most powerful Bleach characters is the real chill captain: Shunsui Kyoraku!
Shunsui appears to be a very relaxed and peace-loving man who you wouldn’t expect to possess the power that he does. He is typically seen attempting to use his words to de-escalate a battle situation with his more intelligent enemies. Typically, his enemies should take the time to consider his kind attempt at peace, because when he releases his dual swords he is a whole different man of focus and combat aptitude. Katen Kyokotsu unleashes as two large chinese scimitars which still possess the general weight of each individual sealed sword. Each attack from his Shikai is representative of a classic game, such as tossing spinning tops. His Bankai, Karamatsu Shinju, attacks like a story book, each stage of the story becoming a more devastating attack as it progresses forward.
Trust me you’d rather not hear that story…

Number Seven: Kenpachi Zaraki
At number seven of our most powerful Bleach characters is a man that’s life and blood is combat: Kenpachi Zaraki!
Kenpachi engages combat like it’s his life’s passion. He gains an immense thrill when he is tasked to defeat a powerful enemy and test his raw strength. For much of the series, Kenpachi is seen using his massive Zanpakuto in its sealed form, as he only later discovers its name and is able to release his Shikai. Even in it’s sealed state, Kenpachi is able to cut through buildings and even at one time Ichigo’s Bankai. Upon release, his Shikai, Nozarashi, becomes a massive war cleaver that is said to be capable of cutting through space itself. Even more devastating is his Bankai, which could be said releases his true self. He becomes an oni-like warrior who loses all resolve of himself and gains massive amounts of resilience and strength, which he relentlessly unleashes on his opponent.
Kenpachi Zaraki at SHJ:
Number Six: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Number six of our most powerful Bleach characters is a walking inferno: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Yamamoto is a force to be reckoned with. As the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 for much of the series, it is clearly seen how he gained such a high ranking. Even with his blade alone, he is a dangerous foe that is near impossible to take down. When releasing his Zanpakuto, Ryujin Jakka, the blade becomes engulfed in flames, which is capable, in and of itself, of turning his opponents to ashes if they are not strong enough to resist. One particular attack of his Shikai is a fully controllable inferno, which he can send out to incinerate only those of his choosing. His Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, consumes all the fire that Yamamoto has released so far, and becomes capable of quite literally erasing something from existence, leaving not even ashes left of his opponents.

Number Five: Ichigo Kurosaki
Coming in at number five of our most powerful Bleach characters is our main protagonist: Ichigo Kurosaki!
Let me start this description off with reminding everyone that this guy was once just some high school kid that could see ghosts. However, after gaining the ability of a substitute soul reaper, Ichigo continously becomes stronger and stronger as the series continues forward. He is a young man of strong perseverance and will, stopping at nothing to gain more and more power to save those he cares for. To give you an idea of this guys innate power, he is both the son of a Quincy and a Soul Reaper. This allows him to attain immeasurable power as he is able to tap into both of these abilities, only enhancing his overall capabilities. His Zanpakuto, Zangetsu, is originally only a manifestation of the Soul Reaper and Hollow abilities he possesses, but still holds a devastating ability in its original Bankai form. However, when gaining its true form, Ichigo’s Shikai can release an ability known as Getsuga Jujisho, which emits a large cross shaped wave of energy that can knock back even one of the most powerful foes ever faced, Yhwach. Upon releasing his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, he is able to emit a massive golden Getsuga Tensho that not even the most powerful enemies could withstand without the ability to negate it or reverse its affects.

Number Four: Sosuke Aizen
At number four among the most powerful Bleach characters is the illusion master: Sosuke Aizen!
Sosuke Aizen is a manipulative genius that causes some serious problems for the Soul Society. His Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, is capable of weaving powerful illusions which he had used to manipulate the Soul Society and hide his true intentions as well as distract opponents during combat. It is not necessarily the power of the blade itself that makes Aizen so fearsome. It is a mix of his intellect and cool demeanor mixed with the ability of Kyoka that makes Aizen so formidable. During combat, he can make it seem that his defeat is inevitable, only to actually have his own blade in-between the shoulder blades of his enemy. He is also able to gather together the powerful forces of the Arrancar under his leadership, which only adds to the overall power at his disposal.
Sosuke Aizen at SHJ:
Number Three: Gerard Valkyrie
Coming into the top three of the most powerful Bleach characters is the boisterous Gerard Valkyrie!
Gerard is an aggressive and boisterous combatant, something similar to Kenpachi. He loves a good battle and commends the strength of his opponents when he is impressed. Unlike a Soul Reaper, Gerard utilizes a Spirit Weapon, as is accustom to those of the Quincy. Known as Hoffnung, his weapon manifests as a black, double-edged sword which is capable of returning any damage caused to the blade back on the assailant tenfold. He is also able to use a Heilig Bogen, which can fire massive and powerful arrows at his enemies, giving him strong combat capabilities up-close as well as at range. He also has access to Yhwach’s The Miracle, which can grant him immeasurable strength to assist him against improbable odds and bring about his victory.

Number Two: Ichibe Hyosube
At number two among the most powerful Bleach characters is the leader of the Zero Division: Ichibe Hyosube!
Ichibe is the leader of the Royal Guard, which is tasked with the direct protection of the Soul King. Unusually, his Zanpakuto does not hold the concealed form of a blade at all, but looks like a large calligraphy brush which he can use to write characters that then take on the ability of its meaning, such as conceal or deflect. It can also be used as a combat weapon, though it seems to cut the word associated with one’s body instead of flesh, such as cutting the word hand into the letters HA, which then renders that hand incapable of using half its function. When his Zanpakuto is awakened into its Shikai, it takes on the appearance of a long polearm, which emits ink from its slashes that can blotch out entire words and render their abilities useless, such as striking an arm and effectively killing all of its motor functions. When his Bankai, Shin’uchi, is released, it gives him the ability to more or less rewrite a persons character that has been impacted by his ink, such as writing Black Ant, which renders them as weak and powerless as a tiny ant.

Number One: Yhwach
Coming in at number one of the most powerful Bleach characters is the Father of the Quincy: Yhwach!
This man is the son of a god, so he had to be in the top three at least…
Yhwach is the son of the Soul King, thus making him inherently a demigod. He is known as the Father of the Quincy, wielding Reishi in a dangerous and skillful way. His Spirit Weapon initially appears as an ornate sword which he can wield with great skill. Yhwach also possesses a bow, Sankt Bogen, which he can manifest anywhere in his general vicinity, which not only can by fired from a simple outstretched finger, but also has the ability to send down a large broadsword of pure Reishi that rivals the cutting power of Kenpachi, if not possessing an even greater ability. However, as powerful as his Quincy abilities are, his innate Soul King abilities are ever more terrifying. One ability of note is the Eyeball Creatures which Yhwach can send out from his very being and essentially seek out Shinigami to devour, though powerful Spirit Pressure or high-level Hado are capable of obliterating them. He also possesses an excessively high amount of Spiritual Power, having the ability to obliterate large structures just from releasing his Spiritual Pressure.
