Did you guys know I LOVE The Dark Tower series?
Oh, and Stephen King and Matthew McConaughey as well.
I’m so freakin’ stoked for the movie, actually.
I’ve been hearing about how different production companies were going to pick up the series (or even just one book), for what feels like forever now. Whether that was going to be in a television show format or movie…heck if I care…just give me some Gunslinger!
Oh, and it also gives us an excuse to see the stud, and legend himself, Matthew McConaughey!
This is a bonus routine that I’m adding in, in between the Spider-Man and GOT themed workouts that we’re doing this month. Similar to how I added Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther workout last week, I felt it fitting to show off McConaughey’s!
Matthew McConaughey Stats:
Height: 6’0
Weight: (approximate) 181 lbs.
Age: 47 years old
McConaughey is pushing 50, and looking as awesome as ever!
He’s not the only one that’s up there that’s lookin’ good that we’ve seen at SHJ, though. We have guys like Robert Downey Jr., Brad Pitt and Wesley Snipes who are already over 50, and Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig and Will Smith who are also getting close!
McConaughey stands in right around the average height we see for the SuperHuman men we’ve features; right there with guys like Stephen Amell, Tyler Hoechlin, Matt Damon, and others.
He stands below guys like Batista, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Momoa, and Ben Affleck, but above Mark Wahlberg, Zac Efron, Kit Harington and Tom Holland.
And, as always, this is just for fun, and the routine will be ready for any of you guys to utilize!

Matthew McConaughey Diet and Nutrition
I want to get one thing straight here: this is to look like Matthew McConaughey in his most stud-like form. This is NOT to look like his stunning performance and portrayal for Dallas Buyers Club. I will make reference to some of the extreme things he did for that diet, but those are just things I feel are fun additions to how far McConaughey goes as an actor.
He lost around 50 lbs for the role.
He states, in regards to losing a ton of weight for Dallas Buyers Club:
“I ate a lot of fish, but only five ounces of it, and then a cup of vegetables,”
And continues to talk about his workout by stating:
“I started off doing a lot of exercise, burning 1,800 calories a day,” he said. “I had to do that for two weeks. My goal was to lose four pounds a week.
“So I was doing that for the first two weeks, lost eight pounds,” he continued. “And then I had a week where I had an injury and I couldn’t exercise, and I stayed on the same diet but I lost the same amount of weight. I was like oh, well hang on. Let me see if I can do this without exercise! And I lost the same amount of weight.”
So, this is something that might seem similar to my weight loss of 50 lbs., but in reality it’s much different being that McConaughey was trying to do it in a time crunch.
It’s fun to analyze, but we’ll take a different approach to getting our McConaughey physique.
We’ve seen a lot of celebs opt for specific restrictions.
For example: Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals, Hugh Jackman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Terry Crews utilize intermittent fasting(something I use daily as well), Mustafa Shakir and Madelaine Petsch are vegans, Brandon Routh and Frank Grillo opt for paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
And, that’s just to name a few celebs from each, by the way.

Matthew McConaughey Workout Routine Research
We just touched on the intense 1,800 calorie burning workout that McConaughey utilized for Dallas Buyers Club, but like I said, we’ll be focusing on something a bit different here.
We’re here to unleash our inner SuperHuman, so switching it up a bit is probably our best option.
Not to mention, sustainability is definitely key, and that type of routine is NOT that.
Bodybuilding.com has done multiple interviews with McConaughey (or his trainer for certain movies) and they tell us that he likes to utilize interval training, circuit training, cardio, and jump rope within his programming.
One thing I also liked was what he shared with Men’s Health. It’s really about not having time to workout, which is something we recently talked about here at SHJ.
In the interview it states:
McConaughey has those days, too: no exercise time. He compensates with active bursts throughout the day.
“I’ll drop and give myself 20 pushups at intervals throughout the day. 9 a.m., bang out 20. Sitting in a boring meeting at 10:30. Bang out 20. I do that 10 times throughout the day, I’ve done 200. Or even mix it up with crunches, squats, whatever. Also, I have a 12-pound medicine ball. I’ll just think, Pick up the medicine ball and don’t put it down for 30 minutes. Try that once. You will have a workout, man.”
We’ve had Academy members take my advice and utilize this type of training throughout the day with some really good success.

Another thing I found is that McConaughey is extremely active! It is not odd to find him rock climbing, swimming, and getting involved in any other type of fun, calorie burning activity.
Men’s Fitness states:
A typical day might include pullups on the kids’ swing set, followed by sprints in his backyard, pushups, one-legged squats, and finally kettlebell work in the driveway. He then takes his road bike out for several miles.
The man is living the life, and his physique is just there as a part of it.
That’s what I call a Cager!

Matthew McConaughey loves fitness. He loves being active. Get in as much activity as possible, and make it fun. I’ll program you 3 days worth of cardio and circuit training styled workouts, and it’s your job to incorporate more!
