Supergirl is one of the CW’s superhero TV series following the success of Arrow.
And breaking down The Most Powerful Supergirl Characters is not an easy task.
Supergirl follows the adventures and fictional battles of The Girl of Steel, and Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, or as she is known by her friends, Kara Danvers. Kara is a Kryptonian, an alien from the dead planet Krypton. She crash-landed on Earth after her home planet was destroyed, and like her cousin Kal-El, grew up with an adoptive Earth family.
The series follows Kara’s journey from being an alien trying to live a normal life and working a normal job, to becoming The Girl of Steel, and a hero in her own right. Throughout the show, Kara faces off against a multitude of villains – both human and extraterrestrial – and with the help of her friends and adoptive family – always manages to foil these would-be evil-doers.
But although Supergirl wins most of their battles against her foes, there are times when her foes come from the least expected place, catch her off guard, and seemingly defeat her. But don’t be fooled. Just like the song goes, “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna bring me down“, Kara always finds a way to keep fighting and keep on hoping for the best outcome. That’s probably the reason The Monitor selected her as the Paragon of Hope in the CW crossover arc ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’.
Over the course of the series’ six seasons, Kara has faced off against many powerful foes BUT has also gained a handful of powerful allies in her fight against injustice and discrimination in all its many forms. Among these heroes who’ve joined her cause are Querl Dox (Brainiac 5), Dreamer, M’gann M’orzz (Miss Martian), J’onn J’onzz (Martian Manhunter), and her adoptive sister Alex Danvers, the Director of the Department of Extranormal Operations.
Many other characters have made their debut on Supergirl, and to list them all would be an entirely separate list in the future. Some of these characters have even popped up and been listed in other SHJ articles like The Top 10 Arrowverse Characters of All Time and The Top 10 Strongest Female Superheroes of All Time.
If you like listicles like this one, here are a few more I think you might like:

Of course we’ve also done a handful of “Most Powerful” and “Most Popular” for other series and superhero shows and movies, so if you’d like to check those out you can visit our other listicles here.
For this article, I searched through several websites like CBR, Ranker, Screen Rant, Whut Culture, to name a few and each website had a different set of characters who made their top 10 list. As with any Top 10 List, the law of averages is your best bet. So, I tallied which characters came up the most and made a list from there. Take note, as the series ends, we may yet get to see some other favorite characters reappear. Who knows? But for now, here’s a look at the Top 10 Most Powerful Characters in Supergirl.
As always, leave your comments below if you were expecting other characters!
MOST POWERFUL SUPERGIRL CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME
Number Ten: Mon-El
Race: Daxamite
Hero or Villain: Hero
Starting off our list of The Most Powerful Supergirl Characters of All Time we have the our favorite Daxamite Prince – Mon-El!
I mean, have you seen any other Daxamite princes on the show that I might have missed?
Well me neither. Mon-El appears at the start of season 2 crash-landing into National City and interrupting the team’s celebration of their defeat of Indigo and Non. Thinking at first that the person inside the Kryptonian pod is another survivor of Krypton’s destruction, Kara rushes the unconscious man to the DEO to revive him.
Later, it’s revealed that he is a Prince of Daxam, a neighboring planet to Krypton, that was forced to get into the pod to save himself rather than risk death along with the rest of his planet when Krypton exploded. Mon-El isn’t nearly as strong as Kara, but he does have some measure of super strength and is invulnerable to bullets. He even gets a super suit courtesy of Winslow Schott, for when he goes out supering with Kara.
While Mon-El harbors no ill will towards Kara, the same cannot be said for the Girl of Steel, who initially mistrusts him when she finds out his race. However, Mon-El slowly proves himself worthy of her trust when he decides to fight alongside her to protect National City when his parents invade Earth in order to make it into New Daxam – even allowing the team to disperse a toxic aerosol that would kill all of his people including himself.
Do you agree with Mon-El’s placement in the top ten or would you push him down to the honorable mentions and bring someone else up into his slot?

Number Nine: Julia Freeman (Purity)
Race: Kryptonian
Hero or Villain: Villain
Coming in at number nine on the list of the Most Powerful Supergirl characters of all time is the first of two Kryptonian Worldkillers on this list- Purity! Here’s a little background on the Worldkillers:
“The Worldkillers were a circle of genetically engineered Kryptonian warriors whose anatomies were altered using dark magic, making them both more powerful and self-sufficient. The Worldkillers were created on Krypton by a cult of Kryptonian witches known as the Children of Juru. “
Purity WAS the human known as Julia Freeman, until her dormant Kryptonian persona started to surface in response to Samantha Arias’ own manifestation of her persona, Reign. When the World Killers are in close proximity to one another, they become stronger. Purity’s power alone – to incapacitate her enemies by way of a sonic scream and her ability as an Empath to enhance her enemies’ emotions – is enough to make her a real threat to the DEO and to Supergirl.
When she broke out of the DEO after being captured, she was able to fight toe-to-toe against Supergirl and was even strong enough to break her legs before her human half (Julia) was able regain control and suppress her Dark Kryptonian persona.

Number Eight: Imra Ardeen (Saturn Girl)
Race: Titanian
Hero or Villain: Hero
At number eight among the most powerful Supergirl characters of all time is our second member of the 31st Century’s League of Superheroes – Imra Ardeen or Saturn Girl.
Imra is a powerful psychic and is able to generate psychic energy blasts and force fields. She is also a telekinetic, able to move objects with her mind – which she is able to use in combat to great effect against the World Killer Pestilence.
Saturn Girl, along with Mon-El and Brainiac 5 travel to the past to stop the Worldkiller Pestilence, before her powers develop beyond their original limit and become a plague in the future called Blight. Imra joins Supergirl and Mon-El to try to subdue Pestilence, however, during their initial battle, she is rescued by her fellow Worldkiller, Purity, and the two Kryptonians escape together.
Later in the season, the Leaguers and Supergirl face off once more against the Worldkillers, and with the help of some new tech from Winslow Schott and Brainiac 5, they are able to defeat the Worldkillers, and Pestilence is killed – erasing the timeline where she became Blight. After the fight, Saturn Girl returns with Mon-El to the 31st century, along with Winslow Schott.

Number Seven: Gayle Marsh (Psi)
Race: Human
Hero or Villain: Villain
Psi is an interesting villain in Supergirl because of the way she can affect The Girl of Steel- psychologically (get it? Psi- psy- never mind). She debuts in the show as a petty thief who induces fear states in her victims – making them relive their worst nightmares. That she can mentally affect Supergirl is quite a feat in itself as even Martian Manhunter was unable to affect Supergirl this way, despite his superior psionic abilities.

Number Six: Samantha Arias (Reign)
Race: Kryptonian
Hero or Villain: Villain
In Season 3, the main baddy was actually the alter-ego of a friend of Kara’s- Samantha Arias. She became the CEO of L-Corp and handled the day-to-day affairs of the company so that Lena could take a step back and focus on her experiments. When an attack on L-Corp goes awry, Sam is caught under some rubble but is revealed to not have gotten a single scratch.
This event triggers the emergence of her Kryptonian persona, Reign. Slowly, Sam starts having more and more black outs that coincide with Reign’s attacks on the city. She proves to be Supergirl’s strongest foe, and actually manages to defeat Supergirl in the mid-season finale.
She is finally brought down by the simultaneous attacks of Mon-El, Supergirl, Brainiac, and Saturn Girl in their final battle inside The Fortress of Sanctuary.

Number Five: Indigo aka Brainiac 8
Race: Coluan
Hero or Villain: Villain
Making it to the Top 5 list of Most Powerful Supergirl Characters is Brainiac 8, or Indigo as she prefers to be called. She is one of two major villains in the pilot season of Supergirl. Alone, she is already a formidable enemy – able to integrate with any technology and take it over and thereby accessing huge amounts of data easily.
Indigo is a Coluan, the same race as Brainiac 5, but unlike the latter, decides to use her intellect to pursue the destruction of all life instead of its preservation. She teams up with Non to bring down Fort Razz (a Kryptonian prison) down on the earth and destroy all life. She’s resilient enough to withstand multiple attacks from Supergirl and Martian Manhunter, and is only defeated when Jonn Jonzz tears her body in two.
SIDE NOTE – Brainiac 8 is portayed by Laura Vandervoort – who incidentally plays Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl in CW’s Smallville.

Number Four: Querl Dox (Brainiac 5)
Race: Coluan
Hero or Villain: Hero
At number four among the most powerful Supergirl characters of all time we move into our second Coluan, and our favorite quipster – Querl Dox aka Brainiac 5! Brainiac 5, or Brainy, as he is later nicknamed by Nia Nal, is a member of the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century. Like #5 on our list, he is a Coluan, a race of aliens beings who place value on intelligence above all else.
At the end of Season 3, when Winslow Schott decides to go with Mon-El and Imra back to the 31st century, Brainiac 5 takes Winn’s place as the Tech Officer at the DEO. For Brainy, there is no greater fight than the fight for truth and the fight to protect those closest to him. He willingly assists and eventually fights alongside Supergirl to save National City time and time again.

Number Three: Hank Henshaw (Martian Mahunter)
Race: Martian
Hero or Villain: Hero
In our Top 3, we have J’onn J’onzz aka The Martian Manhunter. J’onn is The Last Son of Mars… or so he thought until he meets M’gann M’oorz.
J’onn actually debuts on the show as the DEO’s gruff director, Hank Henshaw. For those of you that follow Superman’s story arcs, the name should sound familiar. (Hank Henshaw was an astronaut on a space shuttle but was almost killed when the craft exploded in sub-earth orbit.) In the show, J’onn takes up the guise of Hank Henshaw when the real Henshaw is killed by Kara’s adoptive father as he is about to shoot and murder J’onn.
J’onn eventually reveals his identity to both the Danvers’ sisters and becomes a father figure to them as well as a close friend and confidant. His many years as the DEO director offer a balance to Kara’s initially rash hero behavior and he often provides sage advice for Alex as the fledgling Director.
SIDE NOTE: Perhaps the reason J’onn feels so protective of Kara and Alex is because he finds traits in them that were in his deceased Martian daughters

Number Two: Kal-El/Clark Kent (Superman)
Race: Kryptonian
Hero or Villain: Hero
Clark Kent aka Kal-El/Superman. The Last Son of Krypton. Superman is Kara Zor-El’s younger cousin and is considered the Champion of Earth. It’s hard to provide a significant reason for why Superman is at #2 in this list because he and Kara share identical superhuman abilities. They both have enhanced strength, speed, hearing and stamina, they both have heat and x-ray vision, and both are impervious to most human illnesses (that’s actually a plus thanks to their physiology).
Clark is on the list because while they share the same abilities, he has far more experience in using them to their fullest advantage compared to Kara. The only reason that he is #2 is the fact that he has mentioned previously that Kara is actually stronger than him “by a bit”.

Number One: Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers (Supergirl)
Race: Kryptonian
Hero or Villain: Hero
Coming in at number one among the most powerful Supergirl characters of all time is Supergirl herself! Of course our list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning The Girl of Steel.
Though similar in abilities to her cousin Superman like enhanced strength, speed, hearing and stamina, heat and x-ray vision, and cold breath, Kal has mentioned previously that Kara is actually much stronger than he is. This is clearly shown when Kal is pierced by a silver Kryptonite bullet, and he is made to believe that Supergirl is an escaped General Zod. This results in an all-out battle between the two heroes. Even when Kal was holding nothing back, Kara is able to hold her own and subdue her cousin in an altered and enraged state.
Another notable event was during Myriad, when everyone’s minds were enslaved to do the Kryptonian’s bidding, Kal was affected by the signal emitted because psychologically, he was more human than Kryptonian. Despite having lived on Earth for many years, Kara was not affected by the signal.
Who else would you pull from the honorable mentions to bring up to this list?
