The Top 10 Most Skillful Haikyu Characters of All Time have a lot of fan-favorite characters from series.
As Haikyu is a sports anime, I opted to switch out “Most Powerful” for “Most Skilled” as it felt more appropriate.
Honestly, though, this list was FAR harder to create than other powerful lists like Dragon Ball Z Most Powerful Characters, Jujutsu Kaisen Most Powerful Characters, My Hero Academia Most Powerful Characters, and others we’ve already seen – primarily because we’re ranking characters based on skill in the sport and not raw physical abilities.
Haikyu is a volleyball anime, and the characters seen on this list play various and sometimes multiple roles on the team. The characters on the top ten deserve their slot, and as you’ll see, they are decidedly so. I did a bunch of research on the characters who placed in the Top 10, and almost all websites I came across ranked these 10 in exactly the same position as the others.

I checked out several websites to come up with the ranking on this list. The most notable websites were CBR, Top Tens, Epic Dope, and Fandom. Almost all of these websites listed the same characters in exactly the same spot, with a few interchanged here and there.

TOP 10 MOST SKILLED HAIKYU CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME
Number Ten: Kenma Kozume
School: Nekoma High
Position: Setter
Starting off our list of The Most Skilled Haikyu Characters of all time we have the Nekoma High’s primary setter, Kenma Kozume!
Kenma is the setter for Nekoma High’s Volley Ball Team. He is a player that has acute court awareness and is able to bring the ball to any of his teammates on the field. He is known for using his tactic of ‘Feint Glance’ to misdirect opposing players to guard against a player he has no intention of tossing to. Becuase of his awareness of the playing field, he is able to identify the best chance to do a dump shot, which he uses to great advantage against Karasuno during their matches.

Number Nine: Tetsuro Kuroo
School: Nekoma High
Position: Captain, Middle Blocker
Coming in at number nine on the list of the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is the captain of the Nekoma High Volleyball Team, Tetsuro Kuroo!
Tetsuro coming in after Kenma is fitting considering he was the one who got Kenma inot volleyball in the first place. What’s interesting is that their personalities become completely different. While Kenma remains very shy and withdrawn, Tetsuro developed an outgoing personality and learned to play with others.
Tetsuro is considered the “Scheming King” and is a masterful blocker, able to block hits from larger opponents due to being able to tell the exact timing of the spike, even being able to block more skilled players than himself.

Number Eight: Korai Hoshiumi
School: Kamomedai High
Position: Wing Spiker
At number eight among the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is Kamomedai High’s wing spiker, Korai Hoshiumi.
Hoshiumi is the ace spiker of the team, and is a great all-around player able to play a variety of roles during the game. He excels in delivering jump serves, and is one of the players drafted along with Ushijima by the Schweiden Adlers. During the All-Japan Youth Camp, several of the trainers commented that his abilities have a striking resemblance to that of the ‘Small Giant’ from previous years.
Korai Hoshiumi at SHJ:

Number Seven: Kiyoomi Sakusa
School: Itachiyama Academy
Position: Ace Spiker
Next up among our most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is Kiyoomi Sakusa!
Kiyoomi is the ace spiker of Itachiyama Academy, and is one of the top three aces in Japan. He is one of the students invited to the All-Japan Youth Camp, where he displayed his prowess at spiking and impressed Kageyama. After graduating high school, he goes on to become the MVP of the Collegiate League.

Number Six: Koutaro Bokuto
School: Fukurodomi Academy
Position: Captain, Ace, Wing Spiker
Just missing the top five and coming in at number six among the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is Koutaro Bokuto.
Koutaro is one of the top 5 aces in Japan’s high school division, and is one of the physically strongest players in the series. Like Hinata, he seems to have boundless energy, and serves the triple role of Captain, Ace and Wing Spiker in the Fukurodomi Academy volleyball team. He is an all-arounder like Hoshiumi, proficient in offense, defense, and setting. His most impressive skill is his accuracy, being able to get the ball through even the smallest opening in the opponent’s defensive wall.
Koutaro Bokuto at SHJ:

Number Five: Toru Oikawa
School: Aobajohsai High
Position: Captain, Setter
Making it to the top five among the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is our third team captain – Toru Oikawa!
Toru is the captain and setter for Aobajohsai High and is most feared for his jump serve. More than his physical prowess at the game and his natural athletic ability, he is skilled because he knows how to make use of all the players in his team, and is able to take into account each of his teammates’ skills when setting up the ball.

Number Four: Atsumi Miya
School: Inarizaki High
Position: Setter
At number four among the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is the setter of Inarizaki High School’s volleyball team, Atsumi Miya!
Atsumi is known as Japan’s best high school setter and the best server. He is also a “Tri-Wielder” (a term used for a player who can do three types of serves) and is able to shift between the three types of serves to great advantage against the opposing team. Because of this, players won’t know what style he will use until he serves. Not only is he an incredible server, he is also a high quality tosser, making it easy for players to receive the ball and giving the impression that the spikers on the team have improved.
Atsumi Miya at SHJ:

Number Three: Wakatoshi Ushijima
School: Shiratorizawa Academy
Position: Captain, Ace
Coming in and making the top three among the most skilled Haikyu characters of all time is the main antagonist of the Spring High Preliminary arc in the show.
Wakatoshi is the captain and the ace of Shiratorizawa Academy’s volleyball team. He is considered to be one of the top three aces in the Japan High School league. After he graduates high school, he goes on to become a member of the Schweiden Adlers, a professional team in Japan’s Top Division V-League. He has the ability of delivering high impact spikes that can break through three-man defensive walls.
Wakatoshi Ushijima at SHJ:

Number Two: Shoyo Hinata
School: Karasuno High
Position: Middle Blocker
Coming in at number two among the most skilled Haikyu characters is the show’s protagonist, Shoyo Hinata. As a young boy, Hinata got to watch a match of Karasuno’s ‘Small Giant’, and was immediately mesmerized with the sport. He vowed that he would one day be like that player and thus started his journey to become a top volleyball player. What he lacks in height, he makes up for with incredible jumping power, and seemingly endless stamina.
Shoya Hinata at SHJ:
Number One: Tobio Kageyama
School:Karasuno High
Position: Setter
Coming in at number one among the most skilled Haikyu characters is the setter from Karasuno High, Tobio Kageyama!
Known as a “Genius” setter and the “King of the Court”, Tobio is able to analyze the entire field of play and accurately toss the ball to the player that has the highest ability to score a return point. His skill is so precise that he’s able to come up with quick strategies to allow any player to score, including the inexperienced Hinata when he starts playing at Karasuno.
