We have been on a huge Fullmetal Alchemist kick here at SHJ. Last week I wrote on the Most Popular in the FMA series. This week we are now going to break down who is considered the most powerful of them all!
Felt like a search for the Philosopher’s Stone on this one…
Many characters in the series deserve recognition, but only 10 shall be chosen. However, I will be sure to throw in some runner-ups as well.
You’ll be seeing a name on here from our Most Powerful Anime Characters of All Time article…
I mean obviously they’d be somewhere right?
BUT, before I get into the power of these characters, I want to mention that FMA is a part of our ever growing Workout Database.

For this one I scoured the internet for help and almost every single listicle has a different take on who The Most Powerful FMA Characters are. So what I decided to do was compile ALL of them together and then took the average of all the compiled ratings and placed them in their slot accordingly. Additional characters who did not make it in the top ten that I want to mention as well can be seen in the runner-up section.

MOST POWERFUL FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST CHARACTERS
Number Ten: Edward Elric
Alias: Fullmetal Alchemist
Ability: Combat Alchemy
Starting off our list of the most powerful FMA characters is also featured on our Most Powerful Anime Characters of All Time : Edward Elric!
Crazy to think he’s only number 10 here…
Edward is one of a few alchemists who can actually perform his alchemical skills without requiring a Transmutation Circle. Similar to Izumi Curtis, he is able to use his inner will and simply harness alchemical energy by placing his palms together.
Edward is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Receiving training from Izumi, he is a competent hand-to-hand fighter who can hold his own in physical confrontation. His alchemical abilities are no joking matter either, as from a considerably young age he was able to become a State Alchemist. Unfortunately this alchemical prodigy does lose his abilities in the end in order to save his brother Alphonse’s soul.
Edward Elric at SHJ:
Number Nine: Lust
Alias: Lust the Lascivious
Ability: Ultimate Spear
Coming in at number nine on the list of the most powerful FMA characters of all time is Lust!
Aw…you thought that wall was going to save you…
Lust, as any homunculus, possesses a remarkable ability to regenerate herself instantaneously after taking damage. This ability does come with an eventual limitation as it feeds off the souls which Father gave them at birth.
Lusts greatest threat however, as simple as it may sound, is her fingers. She is able to transform her fingers into needle-like blades which are capable of piercing through any substance which may stand in her way. The most dangerous part of these blades is the speed at which she extends and retracts them and the, as it is believed, infinite distance she can extend them out to hit her target.
But even as dangerous as this homunculus sounds, she is not the strongest here…
Lust at SHJ:
Number Eight: Scar
Alias: The Scarred Man
Ability: Deconstruction Alchemy
At number eight among the most powerful FMA characters of all time is Ishval’s vigilante: Scar!
Scar is a man consumed by his deep hatred of State Alchemists. He watched his land torn by the Amestrian military and thus has sworn to be vengeance incarnate for Ishval.
Scar is a danger with his physical combat prowess alone. He has been seen subduing whole Amestrian units at once, as well as eliminate ten State Alchemists. He has held his own against powerful combat alchemists such as Louis Armstrong and the Elric brothers. His greatest danger lies in his right arm, which is capable, through his unique alchemical array and understanding of the alchemical make-up of various objects, of total material deconstruction. This ability, when applied to his enemies, destroys their internal make-up, which includes their organs and, as believed, even their brain matter.

Number Seven: Greed
Alias: Greed the Avaricious
Ability: Ultimate Shield
Greed is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. As a homunculus, he is already stronger than a typical human and is able to regenerate at a rapid rate as long as he has souls left at his disposal. His unique ability, the Ultimate Shieldc makes it far more difficult to even cause him damage in the first place. This ability allows him to cover his entire body in a diamond hard skin that is virtually impenetrable. The shield can also be used for offense in the form of clawed gauntlets that he forms around his forearms.
Greed at SHJ:
Number Six: Izumi Curtis
Alias: Teacher
Ability: Internal Gate Alchemy
Coming in at number six is the deadly teacher of the Elric brothers: Izumi Curtis!
Izumi is an absolute powerhouse, as mentioned before in our Most Popular Fullmetal Alchemist Characters of All Time.
And placed even higher here… to no surprise.
Izumi, just like Scar, is already dangerous with her mastery of physical combat alone. She is one of the strongest characters in the series in regard to sheer physical power. She is capable of subduing multiple targets around her as well as proving her own against larger opponents.
This includes overpowering a damn grizzly bear…
Izumi is also a master alchemist who utilizes her surroundings expertly. She also shows a similar combative style to Edward Elric, who she herself provided instruction to in combat alchemy. Her greatest threat though, also like Edward, is the ability to manifest her alchemy instantaneously without the use of Transmutation Circles.

Izumi Curtis at SHJ:
Number Five: Roy Mustang
Alias: Flame Alchemist
Ability: Flame Alchemy
Coming in at number five is the human firestorm Roy Mustang!
Roy Mustang is more or less a human flamethrower that would put a Fire Force unit to the test..
Yeah I went there…
Roy’s expert knowledge of experimental theory and biological alchemy has created a very deadly elemental alchemy user. Using specially crafted gloves that possess built in Transmutation Circles, Roy is able to manipulate and concentrate the oxygen surrounding his enemies, and with a snap of his finger, cause a massive combustion. His superior control of this ability allows him to avoid any crossfire amongst his comrades as well.
Each hand is also believed to possess particular affinities as well, according to its particular motor skills. His right hand is primarily the flashy “big boom” hand that directs massive explosions, while his left one is the more fine tuned hand that is delegated to smaller but more pinpointed attacks.
Roy Mustang at SHJ:
Number Four: Wrath
Alias: Wrath the Furious
Ability: Material Fusion
At number four among the most powerful FMA characters of all time we have the spawn of Izumi: Wrath!
Wrath is a dangerous foe to be reckoned with. As with all homunculus, he possesses rapid regeneration, but also can fuse with any material, both animate and inanimate. This allows him to not only use the environment in various means with his body, but is also capable of stealing various components of living things to empower himself.
Wrath is a capable combatant who has a natural ability for physical confrontation..
Which is no surprise as it’s later discovered he is the son of Izumi Curtis!
He is the only homunculus to have been able to perform alchemy, as well as do so without the use of a Transmutation Circle. Wrath was also known to have stolen the abilities of the other Homunculi, including Lusts Ultimate Spear.

Number Three: Pride
Alias: Pride the Arrogant
Ability: Shadow Manipulation
Coming into the top 3 we have a very shady character: Pride!
Pride is a true nightmare to come across. His body appears to be that of a small boy of no particular threat. However, face him in the shadows of his true self and you’ll realize he is no small threat at all.
Pride is able to manifest himself within any shadow that surrounds him. He is also able to control a massive multi-eyed and multi-mouthed shadow beast which is actually his true form. He typically attacks with tendril like shadows extending from his being at blinding speeds. His shadows are capable of manipulating, devouring, or simply slicing through almost anything they come in contact with, though they do no quite have the piercing capabilities of Lust’s Ultimate Spear. He is also capable of assimilating abilities from his devoured victims, which he can freely use once acquired.

Number Two: Van Hohenheim
Alias: Sage of the West
Ability: Human Philosopher’s Stone
Coming in at number two among the most powerful FMA characters of all time is the the immortal man: Van Hohenheim!
Van Hohenheim is basically a god among men. As a Human Philosopher’s Stone, he has lived a long immortal life and is capable of rapid regeneration like a Homunculus. He has accumulated almost 400 years worth of alchemical knowledge and experience in his long life.
Yeah I don’t think any other human in existence could beat that…
Van is not only capable of alchemy without a Transmutation Circle, but can perform alchemy without moving a single limb. Van is also able to communicate with the over half a million souls in his Philosopher’s Stone. This allows him to utilize a wide array of alchemical abilities and even remotely implement his alchemy in any place where souls have been deposited. His “friendship” with these souls only empowers his abilities further and in times of need allows him to call upon them for aid.

Number One: Father
Alias: Philosopher of the East
Ability: Philosopher’s Stone Enhanced Alchemy
Coming in at number one is the “creator god” of the Homunculi: Father!
Father is, at his core, a simple black gaseous being who was created from the Eye of Truth’s essence. However, Father appears as a slightly changed clone of Van Hohenheim while he is contained within his vessel. This body was created from a Philosopher’s Stone that came from the souls of half the population of Xerxes.
Father is capable of performing alchemy without a Transmutation Circle, but also is able to do so without moving at all, just like Van Hohenheim.
But that is not all…
In his true form, Father appears as a similar dark entity to that of Pride. However, when the souls of fifty million Amestrians is absorbed into his philosopher’s stone, he becomes a massive black cyclopean beast with a more solid existence.
What makes Father truly a god however is when he enters his fourth form upon absorbing the “power of God” itself and gaining the ability to completely defy natural order and do as he pleases on any scale by any means he wishes. Although this power does not last forever, as his body is not capable of holding it all within himself after the sacrifice required to obtain it, this power basically made Father a truly divine being with infinite possibility while he still held it.
