The next class joining ourย Dungeons and Dragons Inspired Workouts is one that I didn’t think would make it at first, but you guys in The SHJ Army insisted enough to have them get in above other classes…The Blood Hunters!
I must admit, Blood Hunters are definitely much easier to build a workout around than some of the other classes we have left to do within our D&D Workouts – but when we first set out I assumed we’d be having to make some fun funky builds for some classes and later on make our way to our Blood Hunters.
And, for those of you who don’t know why I’m saying that, Blood Hunters are actually not canon, they are from Matt Mercer’s Critical Role, described as follows: “Matt Mercer of Critical Role fame added these resolute warriors to 5e D&D and they’re now just shy of an official class.” by Skull Splitter Dice.
That said, I’m actually super excited they are making their way into our database because it gives us another great class to build a calisthenics workout around, considering this is the tenth D&D Class we’re seeing, but up until now we only have two calisthenics workouts in there.
In our articles I have mentioned the fact that Iโve been a big MMO gamer for years (especially WoW, but Iโve hopped around to a ton), so this new endeavor into D&D is a perfect fit.
Another side note for this new character creation is that will be skipping the stat section we normally include, and switching up some of the other sections (like the nutrition section, which Iโll have a bunch more added to in order to make it a bit more fun).
Blood Hunter Information:
Inspired By: Dungeons and Dragons (Critical Role)
Goal: Lean and Toned, but Strong with Great Body Control
Introduction to the Blood Hunter Class (from Critical Role Fandom):
Aย blood hunterย is a warrior who uses a rare form of magic known asย hemocraftย to augment their fighting abilities. Many blood hunters are associated with theย Claret Orders.
Extra Notes (from Ability Score Improvement Section):
At 4th level and again at 8th level, 12th level, 16th level, and 19th level, you get to choose between adding 2 points to an ability score, 1 point to two different ability scores, or taking a feat. For the most part you’re going to want to focus on improving your ability scores as much as possible, think long and hard before sacrificing any for a feat.
Side Note: We’re going to be working with a Strength build for this one, but our skill choices will still be Athletics, Acrobatics and one you choose yourself.
I think most people may prefer a dexterity build (and I might be wrong in saying that, but that’s my opinion and also what I was reading), but for the sake of our workout build here we’re going to be prioritizing strength.
That said, we’re also going to have Athletics and Acrobatics be two of our definitive picks when choosing three skills for our Blood Hunter, which is something we’ll also be basing our routine around – and another reason I’m excited we’re able to revolve this one around some fun calisthenics.

Blood Hunter D&D Diet and Nutrition
For our new Dungeons and Dragons themed section of our Workout Database Iโm going to be adding a bit of flair to the diet and nutrition section of each class to make it a bit more fun.
While I do usually add the same section for each hero to give you guys some articles and resources to utilize throughout the site, for this one I will add that secondary.
As you may have noticed, if youโre a member of The SHJ Army and using our workouts a lot (if youโre not, we have over 1,000 workouts, welcome); we also skipped the stats section being that this one is going to be very customizable,ย but the goal is to gain strength, agility, and body control to pair with our Witcher-like build.
There will be more on this below, in the workout research section, but the important thing to note here is that weโre going to want to be in a caloric surplus due to our goals.
So letโs talk about thatโฆ
Blood Hunter Inspired Diet and Nutrition [For Fun]
For our Blood Hunters we’re actually not going to be as unique as we’ve been for some of our other classes when it comes to actually attempting to replicate what they would eat.
There are Blood Hunters out there that are going to want to build in a way that essentially makes souls and flesh.
I wasn’t going to originally even try to relate that to a Carnivore Diet, and I don’t think just because carnivore is strictly lean meat (and therefore blood) is relevant enough to say that’s how we SHOULD be eating for this one – BUT, it’s likely the closest we’re going to get.
For that reason youโre going to want to:
- Eat in a Caloric Deficit to shred fat and keep lean muscle (or a surplus or maintenance if muscle gain is the goal).
- Consider eating as a Carnivore to adopt Blood Hunter-like diet.
- Adopt the 4-Tier Nutrition System we use here at SHJ to have the most effective and efficient diet planning (without sacrificing your life).
I also go much more in depth with calories and their relationship to gaining or losing weight here:ย SHJ Complete Guide to Calorie Counting and Macronutrients.
If youโd like to read more about the Vegetarian diet you can do so here:ย SHJ Guide on The Carnivore Diet.
And you can find the full 4-Tier-Nutrition System right in our Nutrition Pillars.
But to leave you off with some more resources now that we had some fun with the nutrition, Iโm also going to add in some information we always share within our character workouts..
Hero Diet and Nutrition Resources and Subsection
**Keep in mind: this section will be nearly identical for each hero.**
Every hero needs to still have a good diet.
Unfortunately we can train like them, but I donโt think any of us are suddenly getting their powers, or the ability to magically stop caring about nutrition.
You canโt out train your diet, so I want to still give some pillars for nutrition.
You can start by checking outย The Nutrition Pillarsย on the site, but Iโll break down some more information for you guys as well.
Guys likeย Dwayne Johnsonย andย Kevin Hartย incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals,ย Hugh Jackman,ย Tom Hopper,ย Benedict Cumberbatchย andย Terry Crewsย utilizeย intermittent fastingย (something I use daily as well),ย Ariana Grande,ย Mustafa Shakirย andย Madelaine Petschย areย vegans,ย Brandon Routhย andย Frank Grilloย opt forย paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
Itโs all about sustainability.
AND, there are a thousand different ways to reach your goals, so finding the most sustainable way is whatโs important.
Which is why ourย Academyย utilizes multiple different Nutrition Classes (Greek Gods, Vikings, Spartans, Hunter Gatherers, Monks, Samurais, Minimalists, SuperHumans) to allow people to choose what is right for YOU!
Curious where over a hundred celebs fall in their dietary choices ranging from High Protein and Keto to Vegetarian, Vegan and Intermittent Fasting? Want exclusive celeb meal plans?ย Check this out.

Blood Hunter D&D Workout Routine Research
Weโve made it to โthe fun partโ.
And, if you donโt know by now, I say that every single time we get to the workout routine research section for character workouts.
The goal of our Blood Hunter Class is to become lean and muscular/toned while getting strong (Strength Build) with awesome body control and agility.
We’re looking to become sort of a Witcher-style Blood Hunter for this one, and I’ll also be building it out around calisthenics as well.
Here’s what our Critical Role Fandom page tells us about Blood Hunter’s Powers and Abilities:
Anyone who becomes a blood hunter must complete the Hunter’s Bane, a ritual that alters their life’s blood and gives them control over hemocraft magic.
Using this mastery of blood and life energy, a blood hunter is able to invoke blood curses, which impair their enemies in various ways such as by blinding them or by making a creature that falls unconscious lurch forward and make an attack. A blood hunter can amplify a blood curse by drawing their own blood. Doing so makes the blood curse more powerful.
Blood hunters can also empower their weapons with hemocraft. By drawing their own blood, they can wreath their weapon in elemental energy, such as fire, ice, or lightning.
They also continue on to tell us about Blood Hunter’s Orders:
Each of the blood hunter subclasses is named after one of the Claret Orders. Note that a character of any subclass is not necessarily a member of the corresponding Claret Order.
- Order of the Ghostslayer:ย The oldest of the orders. Members of this order seek to study the moment of death, and use their abilities to destroy the undead.
- Order of the Lycan:ย Members of this order are afflicted withย lycanthropy, and undergo a ritual known as The Taming in order to control the curse and combine it with their abilities of hemocraft.
- Order of the Mutant:ย Members of this order study alchemy and concoct mutagenic elixirs to enhance their bodies for combat.
- Order of the Profane Soul: Members of this order forge pacts with otherworldly beings to gain additional magical abilities, similar to those of warlocks.
In an attempt to give you as much freedom to build your Blood Hunter as you’d like I didn’t go into an overly specific breakdown (like I had to for Clerics, for example), while still making sure we’re aware of our overall goals for the workout itself.
And, if you’ve managed to miss the goals of this workout up until this point somehow, here they are again:
- Lean and Muscular, Toned Physique
- Strong, Athletic Frame
- Acrobat Body Control and Agility
To reiterate some more, we’ll also be building this one out using strictly calisthenics, so be ready for some bodyweight work!
