This week we’re bringing a boxer into our Street Fighter Inspired Workouts!
Oh yeah, and we finally have a dedicated page for them as we continue to stack up new characters for them here at SHJ.
Balrog is a fun character to be bringing in because you guys always ask me to build calisthenics routines based on extremely muscular and jacked characters (usually when they’re not exactly warranted) and today we’re going to be able to do just that!
Balrog pulls inspiration off of one of the great boxers of all time: Iron Mike!
And, we already researched Mike Tyson’s workout and have a full (and brutal) calisthenics routine we’ll be using to become Balrog!
Balrog Stats:
Real Name: Balrog
Height: 6’6
Weight: 298 lbs.
Video Game/Anime: Street Fighter
Powers: Yes
Balrog is humongous.
He definitely stands up there with some of the behemoths within our Anime Workouts Database, both in height and mass!
Wolverine was the shortest spot among comic characters we’ve seen at 5’3, prior to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming in at 5’2, (and Gimli even shorter) – but Damian Wayne (Robin) is only 5’4. Goku isn’t that tall either, though, standing only 5’7, with Miles Morales only an inch above him.
One Punch Man falls in at 5’9 right there with Ryu, Nightwing at 5’10, and then Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Green Arrow coming in around 5’11 and Beast joining them.
We’ve had Superman and Eddie Brock’s Venom at 6’3, and Captain America, Scorpion and Batman at 6’2, and Carnage at 6’1. Thor and Cyborg are towering over them at 6’6, Thanos and King right there with them at 6’7, Bane at 6’8, and Deathstroke right below at 6’5, and Black Manta at 6’4.
Ronan and Sagat are 7’5, and Doomsday came in at 8’10, and I doubt any characters are touching that anytime soon.
But, don’t worry if you’re not the same height or weight range.
We write these routines to be utilized by anyone and everyone.

Balrog Diet and Nutrition
**Keep in mind: this section will be nearly identical for each hero.**
Every hero needs to still have a good diet.
Unfortunately we can train like them, but I don’t think any of us are suddenly getting their powers, or the ability to magically stop caring about nutrition.
You can’t out train your diet, so I want to still give some pillars for nutrition.
You can start by checking out The Nutrition Pillars on the site, but I’ll break down some more information for you guys as well.
Guys like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals, Hugh Jackman, Tom Hopper, Benedict Cumberbatch and Terry Crews utilize intermittent fasting (something I use daily as well), Ariana Grande, Mustafa Shakir and Madelaine Petsch are vegans, Brandon Routh and Frank Grillo opt for paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
It’s all about sustainability.
AND, there are a thousand different ways to reach your goals, so finding the most sustainable way is what’s important.
Which is why our Academy utilizes multiple different Nutrition Classes (Greek Gods, Vikings, Spartans, Hunter Gatherers, Monks, Samurais, Minimalists, SuperHumans) to allow people to choose what is right for YOU!
Curious where over a hundred celebs fall in their dietary choices ranging from High Protein and Keto to Vegetarian, Vegan and Intermittent Fasting? Want exclusive celeb meal plans? Check this out.

Balrog Routine Research
We’ve made it to “the fun part”.
And, if you don’t know by now, I say that every single time we get to the workout routine research section for character workouts.
To learn more about Balrog I’ll be pulling right from his Wiki Fandom page, which starts us off here:
Balrog, known as M. Bison in Japan, is a video game character from the Street Fighter series, first appearing as a non-playable boss in Street Fighter II before becoming playable in its update, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition. He is a greedy American boxer who loves booze, gambling and women. He is also a personal bodyguard to M. Bison.
We already know where we’re headed with this one just based on Balrog’s strength and insane amount of mass, so I want to share a bit of background to do his character a bit of justice:
Rising from a childhood of poverty, Balrog was once a great boxing champion and prize fighter who fought his way to the top. Due to his somewhat cutthroat and ruthless nature from his time on the streets, however, he was banned from boxing in his later career for permanently injuring his opponents and accidentally killing one, as well as his illegal maneuvers, particularly his headbutt. Though he enjoyed great fame, especially in the city of Las Vegas where he lived, he valued money more than glory, leading him to join the Shadaloo criminal organization, where he eventually became M. Bison’s chief enforcer.
From there they also tell us a bit about his fighting style/gameplay/moveset:
As boxers, Balrog and Dudley are the only characters in the Street Fighter series whose movesets are almost entirely comprised of arm-based moves (punches, elbows etc.), since kicks are illegal in boxing, although Balrog has no qualms about violating the rules of boxing both in and out of the ring in other ways. His moveset usually includes a headbutt, and during his second Ultra Combo in Super Street Fighter IV known as Dirty Bull, he grabs and headbutts the opponent, then stomps on their foot – the first time he used his foot at all in the games – and finally nails them with a powerful elbow shot.
At the end of all this, though, we already know what we’ll be working around (and with) to train to become Balrog.
The goals for our Balrog Inspired Workout are:
- Balrog’s Insane Mass and Strength
- Balrog’s Speed and Endurance
- Balrog’s Inspiration from Mike Tyson (even if slight)
As I mentioned above: we’ll be accomplishing this with a Mike Tyson calisthenics workout that we’ve already researched in the past.
This will make it fun and also give you guys another calisthenics routine within our Street Fighter Workout Database.
This one is very high volume, but also very easy to scale down by lowering the rep count and cutting exercises or pieces of the routine entirely.
If it still seems a bit daunting you guys can always also opt to start with our Beginner Ninja Workout as well.

Balrog Workout Routine
Training Volume:
5+ days per week
Explanation:
For this one, for obvious reasons (as I mentioned above), we’re going to be training like Mike Tyson in order to train and become Balrog! This gives us the opportunity to add another calisthenics workout routine for a powerful Street Fighter character – while also staying super relevant to the fact that we’re training like a powerful boxer that Balrog drew inspiration directly from.
Want To Upgrade This Workout?
The Superhero Academy now comes with an Upgrade Your Workout Tool that allows Academy members to turn any SHJ workout into a 4-8 week fully planned regime detailing exact weights to lift and including reverse & tradition pyramid training, straight sets, super sets, progressive overload and more.
