Fighters do extremely well here at SHJ, and I think Gearless Joe is going to follow that same trend.
I actually also just had a request come in (that stood out) for Injae from The Boxer, so I might be keeping this little trend going for a couple weeks.
Gearless Joe is extremely motivated, so even before we get into it I do want to make mention to the fact that we’re going to be sticking to calisthenics training for this one, but also at a high volume and intensity to replicate his spirit.
So if you need to start with the Beginner Ninja, I suggest doing that for a bit and then making your way back to this one!
Joe will be living within our regular Workout Placement Quizzes for now, but maybe I’ll eventually even have one devoted entirely to our top fighters.
Joe Stats:
Real Name: Joe / Junk Dog (Unknown Real Name)
Height: 5’11
Weight: N/A
Anime: Megalo Box
Powers: No
Joe is actually fairly tall compared to the average height among male anime characters.
Although he definitely doesn’t compare to our behemoths within our Anime Workouts Database.
Wolverine was the shortest spot among comic characters we’ve seen at 5’3, prior to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming in at 5’2, (and Gimli even shorter) – but Damian Wayne (Robin) is only 5’4. Goku isn’t that tall either, though, standing only 5’7, with Miles Morales only an inch above him.
One Punch Man falls in at 5’9 right there with Ryu, Nightwing at 5’10, and then Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Green Arrow coming in around 5’11 and Beast joining them.
We’ve had Superman and Eddie Brock’s Venom at 6’3, and Captain America, Scorpion and Batman at 6’2, and Carnage at 6’1. Thor and Cyborg are towering over them at 6’6, Thanos and King right there with them at 6’7, Bane at 6’8, and Deathstroke right below at 6’5, and Black Manta at 6’4.
Ronan and Sagat are 7’5, and Doomsday came in at 8’10, and I doubt any characters are touching that anytime soon.
But, don’t worry if you’re not the same height or weight range.
We write these routines to be utilized by anyone and everyone.

Gearless Joe Diet and Nutrition
**Keep in mind: this section will be nearly identical for each hero.**
Every hero needs to still have a good diet.
Unfortunately we can train like them, but I don’t think any of us are suddenly getting their powers, or the ability to magically stop caring about nutrition.
You can’t out train your diet, so I want to still give some pillars for nutrition.
You can start by checking out The Nutrition Pillars on the site, but I’ll break down some more information for you guys as well.
Guys like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals, Hugh Jackman, Tom Hopper, Benedict Cumberbatch and Terry Crews utilize intermittent fasting (something I use daily as well), Ariana Grande, Mustafa Shakir and Madelaine Petsch are vegans, Brandon Routh and Frank Grillo opt for paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
It’s all about sustainability.
AND, there are a thousand different ways to reach your goals, so finding the most sustainable way is what’s important.
Which is why our Academy utilizes multiple different Nutrition Classes (Greek Gods, Vikings, Spartans, Hunter Gatherers, Monks, Samurais, Minimalists, SuperHumans) to allow people to choose what is right for YOU!
Curious where over a hundred celebs fall in their dietary choices ranging from High Protein and Keto to Vegetarian, Vegan and Intermittent Fasting? Want exclusive celeb meal plans? Check this out.

Gearless Joe Workout Routine Research
We’ve made it to “the fun part”.
And, if you don’t know by now, I say that every single time we get to the workout routine research section for character workouts.
To learn more about Gearless Joe I’ll be pulling right from his Wiki Fandom page, which leads us off with this bio section:
Joe is the ring name of the main protagonist of the anime, Megalo Box. Previously known as Junk Dog, his real name has yet to be revealed. He used to make a living by throwing matches underground with Gansaku Nanbu.
After meeting the Megalonia champion, Yuri, he did everything to enter the Megalonia and fight the champion under Team Nowhere. His ring name became “Gearless Joe” after he fought his first opponent without using a gear, and this becoming his signature way of fighting in the ring. Eventually he fights against Yuri, managing to get a KO in the thirteenth round.
Instead of staying as the Megalonia champion, Joe left the ring and stayed together with Sachio in Nanbu’s vegetable farm behind Gym Nowhere.
We’ll obviously also be factoring in Joe’s lean and toned physique as well.
Being that they don’t have a full section for his abilities and skills I’ll be sharing some of his background instead (or lack thereof):
Not much is known about Joe’s backstory or history – even his real name is left unknown. The most concrete information is that he has a past with Nanbu and was probably doing underground Megalo Boxing for at least a year prior to the beginning of the story. In addition, prior to working with Nanbu, Joe did boxing matches in the slums in exchange for money. He would sleep from temporary bed to temporary bed every night.
It should be noted that the three-layered arrow badge on Joe’s jacket is almost always an indication of the army position of sergeant, so it’s likely that either he or someone close to him that gave him that jacket was a sergeant. His scars which he had prior to the start of the show could possibly be from a previous military career, but seeing as Aragaki left the army ten years ago, and assuming whatever war or battle he was participating still continued after that, it may be a rather outlandish guess to claim that Joe was in the military. However, if this conflict is still ongoing or ended relatively recently, again, it is possible he held the position of sergeant.
Another source of Joe’s scars, however, could simply be fights he started or challenges he accepted before Nanbu found him.
As I mentioned, we also know Joe is extremely motivated, and we also already know we’ll be building this one around calisthenics training.
That being said, we can already break down some of our priorities.
Here are the goals for this workout:
- Joe’s Lean and Toned Physique
- Joe’s Speed and Strength
- Joe’s Boxing Endurance
- Joe’s Military Style Training
This one should be extremely fun – but be ready for high intensity and volume.
And don’t be afraid to scale down if needed!
