We saw our Yasuke Inspired Workout this week, and now it’s time for another awesome swordsman to join our Anime Workouts Database.
We’ve had a few other Fullmetal Alchemist Inspired Workouts hit SHJ but recently there have been a handful more requests for some of the more prominent characters, which is really exciting.
So far we’ve seen our Edward Elric Inspired Workout, Roy Mustang Inspired Workout and Armstrong Inspired Workout – but I think Ling Yao is the perfect addition to get us moving into more FMA.
I’m also super exciting because this one is going to be a great addition for our Calisthenics Workouts Database as well.
Ling Yao Stats:
Real Name: Ling Yao
Height: 5’7
Weight: N/A
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist
Powers: Yes
Ling Yao would be considered one of the shortest males we’ve seen if compared to celebrities here at SHJ, but among characters he’s actually within the average when compared to male anime characters.
As far as male characters in general he’s just slightly below average.
Wolverine was the shortest spot among comic characters we’ve seen at 5’3, prior to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming in at 5’2, (and Gimli even shorter) – but Damian Wayne (Robin) is only 5’4. Goku isn’t that tall either, though, standing only 5’7, with Miles Morales only an inch above him.
One Punch Man falls in at 5’9 right there with Ryu, Nightwing at 5’10, and then Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Green Arrow coming in around 5’11 and Beast joining them.
We’ve had Superman and Eddie Brock’s Venom at 6’3, and Captain America, Scorpion and Batman at 6’2, and Carnage at 6’1. Thor and Cyborg are towering over them at 6’6, Thanos and King right there with them at 6’7, Bane at 6’8, and Deathstroke right below at 6’5, and Black Manta at 6’4.
Ronan and Sagat are 7’5, and Doomsday came in at 8’10, and I doubt any characters are touching that anytime soon.
But, don’t worry if you’re not the same height or weight range.
We write these routines to be utilized by anyone and everyone.

Ling Yao Diet and Nutrition
**Keep in mind: this section will be nearly identical for each hero, unless I mentioned differently (for example someone like Hulk may get something specifically different)**
Every hero needs to still have a good diet.
Unfortunately we can train like them, but I don’t think any of us are suddenly getting their powers, or the ability to magically stop caring about nutrition.
You can’t out train your diet, so I want to still give some pillars for nutrition.
You can start by checking out The Nutrition Pillars on the site, but I’ll break down some more information for you guys as well.
Guys like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart incorporate 80/20 dieting with big weekly cheat meals, Hugh Jackman, Tom Hopper, Benedict Cumberbatch and Terry Crews utilize intermittent fasting (something I use daily as well), Ariana Grande, Mustafa Shakir and Madelaine Petsch are vegans, Brandon Routh and Frank Grillo opt for paleo, and tons of others utilize their own variations as well.
It’s all about sustainability.
AND, there are a thousand different ways to reach your goals, so finding the most sustainable way is what’s important.
Which is why our Academy utilizes multiple different Nutrition Classes (Greek Gods, Vikings, Spartans, Hunter Gatherers, Monks, Samurais, Minimalists, SuperHumans) to allow people to choose what is right for YOU!
Curious where over a hundred celebs fall in their dietary choices ranging from High Protein and Keto to Vegetarian, Vegan and Intermittent Fasting? Want exclusive celeb meal plans? Check this out.

Ling Yao Workout Routine Research
We’ve made it to “the fun part”.
And, if you don’t know by now, I say that every single time we get to the workout routine research section for character workouts.
To get us started we’re going to be pulling right from Ling Yao’s Wiki Fandom page, starting with what they tell us for his bio:
Ling Yao, also spelled as Lin Yao, is the twelfth crown prince of the eastern nation of Xing and the liege of the Yao clan. Seeking a way to ensure his path to the throne amidst deadly inter-house competition, Ling has ventured from Xing to Amestris in order to divine the secret of immortality – the Philosopher’s Stone.
They describe Ling Yao’s appearance and some of his training as such:
Ling is tall and looks mature for his age, despite actually being a few months younger than Edward, and has a lean, muscular, and slender frame clearly toned from a lifetime of training in the Xingese martial arts.
Which is a perfect transition to bring us into some of his abilities.
Here’s how they start off that section for Ling Yao:
Ling is a highly skilled combatant, well-versed in Xingese styles of martial arts. He is also an expert swordsman, and was able to hold his own for a short time against the likes of King Bradley, a homunculus with arguably the greatest martial capabilities of anyone in the series. He has displayed significant agility and remarkable strength – even going so far as to lift the behemoth Gluttony by himself. Like many other Xingese royal martial artists, Ling is able to read the flow of the Dragon’s Pulse, which gives him the ability to sense, locate and track the Qi of living beings around him, such as animals, allies and foes. Additionally, it allows him to sense spiritual anomalies like Philosopher’s Stones, and concordantly any Homunculus besides Wrath (who contains only a single soul and therefore normal Qi).
They also add onto that with:
Aside from his prodigious physical skills, Ling is a crafty and capable tactician, able to think several moves ahead of the enemy the big picture as well as incorporate his surroundings, various skills and unique tools to his advantage in a battle. His natural charm and intelligence make him a model leader on and off the battlefield.
As a Homunculus, Ling gains the ability of instant regeneration; he also gains the Ultimate Shield. However, these powers come at the cost of leaving Greed in control of his body most of the time. Upon Greed’s Philosopher’s Stone being sucked back out, Ling loses these abilities.
For this one we’re going to be training with a MMA and cross-training kind of feel mixed into our calisthenics.
I’ll be pulling from other mixed martial artists training that we’ve seen here at SHJ and bringing it into this high intensity calisthenics training – but also make sure to prioritize strength and core work.
Get ready.
