We’re here to talk about the best anime to watch on Netflix.
We’ve seen some pretty awesome listicles at SHJ, but now I have TWENTY FIVE of the best anime series to watch on Netflix, AND workout routines inspired by characters from every single one of them…!
We had some pretty awesome listicles hit SHJ recently and you guys left some comments asking about my top picks for both Hulu and Netflix, so I decided to do some mega listicles with all the best shows for you guys to take advantage of.
As you guys are well aware I’m not only a weeb, but I’m also a huge nerd and I read and watch everything in sight; from Harry Potter and Game of Thrones – all the way to all the anime and superhero shows you can imagine!
That being said, I feel like I have a pretty good couple of lists for you, starting with sooooo many amazing options on Netflix.
Whether you’re new to anime and looking for the best series to start with on Netflix, or just looking to see some of the very best without having to dig through all the search features that aren’t always the easiest to navigate: this list is definitely going to help.
Here’s how I’m breaking it down:
- Outside research of the most popular and “best” anime on Hulu from other perspectives, lists and rankings.
- My own bias of my favorite shows (that typically are right there with popular opinions).
- SHJ Academy recommendations on specific shows that are a MUST to be added to this list.
- The amount of workouts we have for the given show.
And then I’m typing all that together and throwing it into one big listicle. So there’s by no means some super accurate ordering for this one (especially because there are so many amazing options), but when we get to the top ten you’ll really start seeing some fan favorites, AND my favorites.
If you’re also interested in some other awesome listicles we have had here recently you can check out:
- The Most Powerful Anime Characters of All Time
- The 10 Most Popular Anime of All Time
- The 10 Most Powerful Superheroes of All Time

And there’s a ton of other listicles, and hundreds of workouts within our Workout Database and even our Anime Workouts Database if you’d like to segment it to just anime inspired routines.
Okay, let’s get into it!
BEST ANIME TO WATCH ON NETFLIX
BONUS: Pokemon
Seasons on Netflix: Sun & Moon = 3, Indigo = 1, Journeys = 4
Movies on Netflix: 3
Episodes on Netflix: Sun & Moon = 145, Indigo = 52, Journeys = 48
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 3 + Movies
Coming in first, just like what we did for our Hulu list, is Pokemon!
Pokemon is one of the series that got me into anime, although Dragon Ball Z is the “real” anime that got me started (spoiler alert: it’s not on Netflix), and Pokemon has stuck with me since the very beginning.
I even have a Deadpool Pikachu tattoo on my left forearm.
Pokemon Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Twenty Five: Blood of Zeus
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 8
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Blood of Zeus is a Netflix Original about the gods with Hermes as the main character.
It only has one season with 8 episodes, but they’re a STRONG eight episodes and it’s already confirmed to be coming back for season two.
If you’re into Greek Mythology or demons…or both…then this one is for you!
You can check out our Hermes Inspired Workout here.
Number Twenty Four: Saint Seiya
Seasons on Netflix: Sainy Seiya = 6, Saint Seiya The Lost Canva = 1, Knights of the Zodiac Saint Seiya
Episodes on Netflix: Saint Seiya = 114, SSTLC = 26, KOTZSS = 18
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 3
Saint Seiya is an oldie but a goodie that has been brought back to life by Netflix!
Netflix not only has 114 episodes of Saint Seiya from 1986, but they also have one season of Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas from 2009 and a brand new Netflix Original called Knights of the Zodiac Saint Seiya from 2020 which already has two seasons and seems to be doing really well!
You can check out our Pegasus Seiya Inspired Workout here.
Number Twenty Three: Kuroko’s Basketball
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 26
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Kuruko’s Basketball joined Haikyu!! as the first ever sports themed anime to make it to SHJ.
I wish there were more seasons and episodes (Haikyu!! at least has two seasons), but Kuroko’s Basketball is still a ton of fun and a 26 episode single season is still not bad; especially considering Netflix’s normal series go for about 8-13 episodes.
You can check out our Tetsuya Kuroko Inspired Workout here.
Number Twenty Two: Dorohedoro
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 13
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Speaking. of Netflix series having around 13 episodes, Dorohedoro is another anime Netflix Original.
Netflix has noticed a trend in anime and is investing time and money into making their own series for the fans to love. Netflix mentioned a severe uptick in the amount of households who watched anime in 2020, so it’s safe to say their investment isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
You can check out our Nikaido Inspired Workout here.
Number Twenty One: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Movies on Netflix: 2
Episodes on Netflix: 26
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1 + Movies
Neon Genesis Evangelion is another oldie but goodie.
Netflix has the original first season from 1995 and also The End of Evangelion from 1997 and Evangelion Death (True)2 from 1998. I was never a die hard fan, BUT, I did go back and watch the season to be a proper weeb with you guys and it’s definitely worth the watch!
You can check out our Asuka Inspired Workout here.
Number Twenty: Beastars
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 12
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Even though Beastars original season is from 2019, it’s still getting a season two!
Beastars isn’t my typical show of hero VS. villain (like DBZ, My Hero Academia, Naruto, Baki, etc.) but I still thoroughly enjoyed it after giving it a chance once all The SHJ Army pushed me hard enough.
If you’re looking for an anime with a ton of deeper meaning to it, then this is a great one to dive into. It might be a bit dramatic at times, but it is still an underrated gem on Netflix.
You can check out our Legoshi Inspired Workout here.
Number Nineteen: Kengan Ashura
Seasons on Netflix: 2
Episodes on Netflix: 24
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 2
As a huge Baki fan I almost automatically enjoy Kengan Ashura, but not nearly as much as Baki.
Kengan Ashura is another Netflix Original (and this won’t be the last time I’m saying that), and it already has multiple seasons, so if the fanbase keeps it up we can definitely see more and more of Tokita Ohma and this mixed martial arts anime.
You can check out our Tokita Ohma Inspired Workout here.
Number Eighteen: Kakegurui
Seasons on Netflix: Anime = 2, Live Action = 2
Episodes on Netflix: Anime = 24, Live Action = 15
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 2
Kekegurui is a super, super fun gambling anime that will NOT disappoint.
The main character Yumeko Jabami is infatuated with gambling and going to a school that’s ready for the action…or so they think. The show is actually so popular it even had rapper Megan Thee Stallion dressing as Yumeko for Halloween.
You can check out our Kakegurui Inspired Workout here.
Number Seventeen: InuYasha
Seasons on Netflix: 2
Movies on Netflix: 4
Episodes on Netflix: 54
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1 + Movies
Unlike Hulu that has only the 2 seasons of Inuyasha, Netflix also has FOUR different movies for you to follow up with.
The show dates back to 2009-2011 and Netflix has follow-up movies from 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 at the ready. Clearly InuYasha had a little more to say after the show was done and a movie was releasing once per year to keep it going!
InuYasha is an awesome half demon character that is an incredibly powerful warrior and swordsman. Based on the manga, this anime definitely lives up to the hype.
You can check out our Inuyasha Inspired Workout here.
Number Sixteen: Gurren Lagann
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 27
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Gurren Lagann only has it’s one season with 27 episodes, but we’ve seen Netflix bring back and revive some older anime before, so who knows what could potentially happen with any of the shows they have on their platform. Watching the great ones only helps show Netflix that there’s interest and makes it easier for them to pick some to revive if they’re thinking about it.
Gurren Lagann Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Fifteen: Blue Exorcist
Seasons on Netflix: 2 (Blue Exorcist and Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Sage)
Episodes on Netflix: 25 / 12
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 2
Simliar to Inuyasha, Blue Exorcists main character is a halfling as well. Rin Okumura is the son of Satan, and ironically enough him and his twin brother Yukio are out to defeat him (the Devil) and his demons!
Netflix comes in with both the 25 episode season and also the Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Sage, which Hulu does not have, so you’re at an advantage starting here!
You can check out our Rin Okumura Inspired Workout here.
Number Fourteen: Sword Art Online
Seasons on Netflix: 3 (2 Seasons and SAO: Alicization)
Episodes on Netflix: SOA = 50, SOAA = 24
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 2
There are about 74 episodes of Sword Art Online on Netflix, and we have some die hard fans of it in The SHJ Army, making it come in among the top 15 anime to watch on Netflix.
Sword Art Online is one that I feel people either LOVE so much or have mixed feelings about; but I personally like it.
I’m curious to know where you stand on this one…comment below!
Sword Art Online Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Thirteen: Haikyu!!
Seasons on Netflix: 2
Episodes on Netflix: 50
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Haikyu!! was technically the first ever sports themed anime we’ve ever had a character for at SHJ.
It’s also a big fan favorite out there among anime right now, and definitely among The SHJ Army as well. The requests for Shoyo Hinata were so overwhelming I not only used his character for inspiration for a workout, but also went and watched the show as well.
We’ll likely have some more sports-themed anime show up at SHJ, and even more from Haikyu!! in the future as well.
Check out the Shoyo Hinata Inspired Workout Routine here.
Number Twelve: Bleach
Seasons on Netflix: 5
Episodes on Netflix: 18-28 per season
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1 + Movies
Where Hulu has 366 episodes, Netflix has less but has movies to make up for it.
So if you’re a die hard bleach fan after watching 5 seasons you may just have to head over to Hulu to watch the rest, but you’re likely not going to want to miss out on all the movies Netflix has at the ready.
Bleach Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Eleven: Castlevania
Seasons on Netflix: 3
Episodes on Netflix: 4/8/10
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Castlevania is ending with Season 4, but Netflix plans on expanding the universe with another series within the same universe.
The SHJ Army LOVES Castlevania, and I did my best to help it make it into the top ten anime to watch on Netflix, but it just missed it being that there are just so many other amazing ones that I get to name next.
You can check out Trevor Belmont Inspired Workout here.
Number Ten: One Punch Man
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 12
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Technically Hulu has triple the amount of episodes for One Punch Man, but Netflix is where I first started it and it made me go and watch more.
It’s such a good show it was hard to warrant not having it come in the top ten, even if there aren’t that many episodes to watch.
When it comes down to it, this is a list about the best anime to watch on Netflix, not necessarily whether or not they have a ton of seasons, considering it’s a great way to give some of these awesome shows a chance.
One Punch Man Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Nine: Seven Deadly Sins
Seasons on Netflix: 4
Movies on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 76
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1 + Movie
Seven Deadly Sins continues to grow and grow and is now a Netflix Original Series as well.
It’s new mobile game has blown up to thousands and thousands of players and the show is an incredible success, and a lot of fun for not only viewing, but also writing routines around with the characters as inspiration.
SDS was an easy choice for the top ten, and considering how much praise I’m giving it, that should show you just how could this next list is following it.
Seven Deadly Sins Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Eight: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Seasons on Netflix: 2
Episodes on Netflix: 74
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
I love me some Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Netflix has one season less than Hulu, but it DOES have The Stardust Crusaders with Jotara Kujo, which is the important part!
We do still have a workout inspired by our original Joestar, Jonathan, and also our villain Dio Brando, but my favorite is The Stardust Crusaders, and most fans seem to agree.
Jojo’s Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Jonathan Joestar Workout Routine
Number Seven: Baki
Seasons on Netflix: 3
Episodes on Netflix: 39
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
I wanted so badly to force Baki into the top five anime to watch on Netflix, but I just couldn’t warrant it. The next six shows are just so good.
I’m actually a huge Baki fanboy (if you couldn’t tell), and I can’t wait for more. Baki is an absolute badass, and at first I thought it was a little over the top but you give it a chance and then you can’t stop watching.
Baki Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Six: Death Note
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 64
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
I think Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood could easily be in the top three shows on Hulu if it were based STRICTLY on quality of the anime as a whole.
Hulu has the same 64 episodes as Funimation and FMA is incredible; so this was an easy top ten, it just doesn’t happen to be the very best for training and SHJ standards.
You can check out our Light Yagami Inspired Workout here.
Number Five: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Seasons on Netflix: 5
Episodes on Netflix: 64
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Similar to what I said on our Hulu list: I think Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood could easily be in the top three shows on Netflix if it were based STRICTLY on quality of the anime as a whole.
Netflix has the same 64 episodes as Funimation and Hulu, and FMA is incredible; so this was an easy top ten, it just doesn’t happen to be the very best for training and SHJ standards.
Fullmetal Alchemist Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
Number Four: Hunter X Hunter
Seasons on Netflix: 4
Episodes on Netflix: 12-26 per season
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Hunter X Hunter is one of my favorite anime of all time.
Unfortunately you won’t be able to finish the entire show on Netflix, but there is A LOT of it there ready for you.
If you love it after your four seasons you can hop over to HBO Max and watch more, but with the 12-26 episodes per season it gives you way more than enough content to decide if you’re a Hunter X Hunter weeb like me.

Number Three: Demon Slayer
Seasons on Netflix: 1
Episodes on Netflix: 26
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
In the top three anime to watch on Netflix we have Demon Slayer!
I wanted it to be Hunter X Hunter, I’ll admit it; BUT The SHJ Army has been just absolutely LOVING Demon Slayer so I couldn’t disregard that.
We get dozens of requests for more Demon Slayer characters each week and it’s going to quickly join our other mini-databases within our Anime Workout Database like DBZ, Naruto, MHA and ATLA.

Number Two: One Piece
Seasons on Netflix: 4
Episodes on Netflix: 15-61 episodes each
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Again Hulu comes in with a lot more episodes overall, but there’s still A LOT of episodes to watch of One Piece on Netflix, and The SHJ Army loves it almost enough to put it in the running for the top show to watch on Netflix right now.
Another thing to note is that Netflix is coming out with a live action One Piece series, so that makes it a great place to get into it and prepare for that to drop.
One Piece Inspired Workouts at SHJ:
One Piece Mini-Workout Database Coming Soon
Number One: Naruto
Seasons on Netflix: 9
Movies on Netflix: 8
Episodes on Netflix: 25-29 each (Season 9 is 8 ep.)
How Many Different Shows/Series on Netflix: 1
Coming in at the number one show to watch on Netflix is Naruto!
There are nearly 1,000 episodes to watch across all the different shows on Hulu, but Netflix does it again with the amount of movies they have to make up for it.
They also have 9 reasons of Naruto where-as Hulu has Naruto Shippuden, Boruto and other content coming in to make for a large amount of the episodes we saw with them.
Another reason Naruto is number one on this list is because our SHJ Army absolutely LOVES all the characters and constantly demands more and more; enough for it to have been our second mini workout database.
Naruto Inspired Workout Database
